Conservative Dems did the same kind of obstruction and holding important bills hostage when Obama became president and Dems had both chambers of Congress. They watered down bills. Then both chambers of Congress went back to Repubs, the conservative Dems lost reelection, and after Obama left office, Donald Trump won. We are doomed to repeat this nightmare.

After Obama took office in January 2009, Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate with a supermajority (from June 2009 until February 2010) in the Senate. There was nothing Mitch McConnell nor any other Republican could have done to stop legislation getting passed during those months. The other thing that Democrats could still do is to completely remove the filibuster which is an undemocratic Senate rule, not a law and not found anywhere in the Constitution. With a simple 51-vote majority, the Senate could do away with the filibuster now. Democrats previously did away with the filibuster for confirming court judges, and Republicans did away with the filibuster for confirming Supreme Court justices.
