  1. The USA tried to take away their tax-exempt status, I think during the Clinton administration. Then Scientology got their cult members to file thousands of lawsuits which would have tied up the DOJ in court for years. So the US gov't dropped their attempt to remove Scientology's tax-exempt status. Watch the documentary "Going Clear". Very good and shocking.
