  1. Many years ago, I was working for a major corporation. I had an emergency hospitalization. My admission and stay had been approved by my insurance at the time. However, after I got out of the hospital, my HMO retroactively disenrolled me for the entire year! I was suddenly facing the entire $30,000+ bill. I kept asking, "when I paid my premiums every month on time, where did that money go?" No one would answer that. Finally, I was able to get my company's HR to arrange with a different HMO to cover most of my bill.
