  1. Republicans in general have no ability to empathize with other people unless they have some personal connection to them. Former Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was one of only a handful of pro-LGBT Republicans in Washington. Then her kid came out publicly as transgender. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush had been hard-core on criminalizing illicit drug use until his daughter got caught writing her own prescriptions. The whole concept of "try to put yourself in someone else's shoes" does not mean anything to most Republicans.
