  1. The Glass-Steagall Act, part of the Banking Act of 1933, protected banks from using FDIC government-insured deposit account funds to make risky investments. Glass-Steagall worked very well at protecting the US economy until 1999 when pro-corporate, pro-Wall Street Democratic president Bill Clinton signed its repeal. That led to the Great Recession of 2008. In response, the less-stringent Dodd-Frank Act was passed in 2010 to provide some protections. Republicans incl. Trump repealed Dodd-Frank in 2018. Now we have SVB collapsing. Short-term cash grabs, long-term catastrophes.
