I bought a sidecutting manual can opener at an IKEA in the USA years ago. This opener is more like a traditional one but it cuts just below the seam, not on top of the lid, and not into the seam. You do have to squeeze to make the cut, but the lid stays on top. Plus, the weight of the opener rests on the lid as the opener is held parallel to the lid, not perpendicular to it. I moved within the USA, gave up the sidecutter, and then found that IKEA no longer sold it. But when I later moved to Europe, the IKEA store there still sold the sidecutter! I bought one and brought it back to the states two years later when I returned. It is funny that Americans apparently could not figure out the sidecutter whereas Europeans could.
