The vast excess of management and admin staff is a cancer throughout British organisations, sapping resources that could be much better used. In itself this would be bad enough, but these parasites also often make life much harder for those doing the real work. Here are 3 examples: 1. Around 50 years ago, when I was at school there was usually a head, deputy and one or two receptionists/secretaries. That was all schools needed. Take a look at what this has now ballooned to. 2. About 45 years ago the registries of most universities were often well run by 3 or 4 elderly ladies. Admin staff numbers at universities have now gone through the roof, and many of these have the temerity to tell professors and lecturers which students should be offered places! 3. Then we have the workplace. Almost all used to function very well with a small payroll department. This was all they were responsible for. Those who knew the kind of people that a company needed did the recruiting and then told payroll who was starting when, and on what salary. Now we have jumped up HR departments who try to tell those who know far better than them who they should recruit.
