  1. We've had many decades of the "tough man" war on drugs policy and it's had bugger all success. All it's achieved is the creation of an incredibly lucrative industry for criminals (which gangs fight to the death over) and a tsunami of crime by those desperate to fund their addiction. Without these counterproductive laws the price of drugs, and the associated crime, would collapse overnight. You have to do what actually works, not what you think should work, and what your moral indignation prompts you to do. Focus on education and treating those with addiction. While some may find this morally repugnant it's likely to be much more effect, and vastly cheaper, when one looks at the bigger picture.
