  1. Spence is clearly an idiot. Expanding the borders of an organisation doesn't have to have to mean it's not defensive. This expansion is being done at the specific request of these two countries. NATO has not pressured them to join. And yes, in a way they did need to join. An expanded NATO is the exact opposite of Putin's known aims. This decreases his credibility, and makes it more likely he, and his so-called "strong men" will be "removed". If this happens the chance of peace is massively increased.

  2. Then we would be well and truly screwed. Putin is a megalomaniac psychopath. Without NATO he would have simply proffered another excuse, and probably done what he's done, and a lot more, far sooner.
