If there were "reasonably rigorous checks" we wouldn't have 45% being awarded grade A or A*. Time and time again, our schools and teachers have proven, beyond reasonable doubt, that they cannot be trusted to grade GCSE and A-level exams. I have to say that I never went to university to enhance my job prospects. It was for the pure love of wanting to understand a lot more maths, chemistry and physics. Of course these are also incredibly useful subjects.
