I'm sick of seeing this come up time and time again. Yes, timed exams aren't perfect, but they are by far the fairest method of assessment that we have. The way gradings shot up when they were left to teachers, shows beyond all doubt that schools and teachers cannot be trusted to make fair assessments. As a teacher who graded fairly myself I was pressured to up my students grades, so as not to upset parents. I refused, but I'm in a very small minority.
