I'll always remember the graffiti over the toilet roll, when I was at King's College London: "sociology degrees, please take one". The fact of the matter is that the majority of degrees are absolutely useless. All they do is keep the lecturers off the dole, and those taking them off the street for a few years. The one good thing is that, unlike many years ago students now have to pay for their Noddy degrees instead of the taxpayer. As Mercy rightly says, universities should revert to how they were in my day. They should be centres of research and academic excellence for between just 5% and and 10%. What the teachers at school don't tell their students is that a good plumber or electrician earns a lot more than they and most graduates do, and usually enjoys their job a lot more, and the same goes for many other trades.
