If you examine the contract for many professional jobs, you will see that it prohibits you from taking on other employment. The reasoning behind this is that it will sap the physical and mental resources that you bring to your job. Between pay and expenses MPs are well enough remunerated to be expected to devote their working time purely to serving their constituents.
