  1. When myself and many others had mortgages we would have been doing cartwheels of joy if the rate had been as low as 6%. Are so many people that stupid as to believe mortgage rates would remain at absurdly low levels, and make no allowance for them rising to something more realistic?

  2. ​ @untenableposition  And you know why house prices are now so high? Because of unbridled lending by greedy reckless banks and building societies. If the old rules about only lending 3 to 4 times yearly income had been adhered to house prices would be much more affordable.

  3. ​ @untenableposition  You may have a very good point. It's definitely the case in New Zealand that immigrants pushed house prices through the roof. When I went to live there a couple of decades ago I was able to buy a large bungalow, in a good area, outright. I still had money left over after fully furnishing it (including whiteware) and buying a new 4-wheel drive.
