  1. There's nothing smart about them. They are just a cheap way of not doing things properly. Something we in Britain are really good at. You either add an extra lane or you vastly improve and reduce the price of public transport, to tempt people off the roads. You've got to be incredibly stupid to believe that there's anything smart about getting rid of the lane designed to allow quick emergency access to accidents, and provide a space for broken down vehicles that would otherwise seriously disrupt the traffic flow. Before long some suicide terrorists are going to figure out how to really have a field day with this cheapskate "solution".
