Thankfully, for the taxpayer, the British foreign office is actually incredibly mean. When I taught at an international school in Berlin there were a couple of UAE kids attending it. This meant that every single teacher at the school, and any partner they wanted to bring along, got an invite to the really sumptuous UAE embassy Christmas do. In stark contrast the schools where the British embassy's ambassador's wife was the chair of governors and deputy head got bugger all from that much closer connection.
