McGovern has deliberately avoided mentioning one explosive fact that both government and schools desperately don't want parents to know. For at least a couple of decades schools have assiduously avoided employing the most experienced teachers, massively favouring the least experienced ones. You see there are two things very undesirable about older teachers. Firstly they cost a lot more, and secondly, having been round the block a few times, they are much harder to "manage". One of the very best ways to improve schools would be to COMPLETELY remove all hiring and firing decisions from headteachers. This should be centralised within the DfE. It would save a bloody fortune in advertising while also making the application process a one of event and thus vastly less onerous.
