Much as I think what is being done to Ukraine is abhorrent, if Moscow genuinely views NATO as hostile to Russia then, regardless of the reality, negotiations have to take this into account. A certain degree of pragmatism is needed, as sticking to one's principles seems likely to not only have an incredibly high price, but ultimately be in vain, or yield a Pyric victory.
Very hard as it is to swallow, the least damaging solution, if it is acceptable to Moscow, would be to let the two regions in Ukraine, and the one in Moldavia join Russia. If this is what the majority in these regions want it would demonstrate OUR much vaunted democracy, and rid the these countries of what is probably not worth the trouble of trying to keep. And if it saves the destruction of 2000 year old Kyiv, and a lot more, then maybe agreeing not to join NATO is a better choice than having little worth defending.
People need to put their emotions to one side, and consider just how much EVERYONE stands to lose. War is a lot like two vicious, but fairly evenly matched, thugs fighting to the death. The one who survives has probably had an ear and nose bitten off, an eye pocked out, and quite a few bones broken. That's not much of a win!
