For many, many years banks and building societies would only lend about 3½ times income, and speculative buy-to-let lending was unknown. This prudent control on lending kept house prices at affordable levels, because you can't charge prices higher than people can get the money to pay (notice that I didn't say "than people can afford"). Irresponsible lending is by far the main cause of today's problems. Yes, it's going to be very hard to put the genie back in the bottle, but prudent lending needs to return, along with a housing price crash that will once again give young people a fair chance of owning their own home.

 @moon1val It seems that few are honest and brave enough to blame inflation on lockdowns, which several reputable recent studies show were completely ineffective.
