Doing things on the cheap has been the British way for as long as I can remember. The trouble is that you almost always pay a lot more in the long run when you try to cut corners. To give but one example we wouldn't have the debacle of all those wrongly accused sub post office masters if good I.T. people had been chosen to write their system. But they would have cost a bit more. In my I.T. development days I used to wipe the floor with whole teams of cheap programmers that software houses employed. I was a lot more expensive than any one of them, but as I could do more than all of them put together employing people like me was ultimately a massive saving.
