  1. My French isn't the best in the world, but I would expect this to be pronounced "ny jay", like the ger in manger (to eat). For the pronunciation given by the teacher I would expect the spelling to be Nigère. Actually, if I had been teaching that lesson, in the interest of giving the most educational lesson possible, I would have explained that the word Nigger originated as a way of describing someone who came from Niger, or from the region boarding the river of the same name. Originally it had the same purpose as calling someone who comes from Scotland a Scot.
