Like most people you don't know the half of what a horrible life being a teacher in the UK is. You might be surprised at how many hours a lot of teachers put in. Those 14 weeks then don't look quiet so good. Not that most people are prepared to believe this. If teaching in the UK were wonderful then there wouldn't be such a shortage. In Canada it's bloody hard to get a teaching job, because they look after their teachers well. As for retire at 50, once you hit the top of the classroom teacher's pay scale most schools won't touch you with a barge pole: preferring cheap NQTs or on the job trainees. And a good percentage of schools even try to bully experienced and expensive teachers into quitting. So many of those 50 year-olds have been forcibly retired!

@paulsamson6039 That's what I've been doing since I returned to the UK about 10 years ago. I privately tutor A-level maths, further maths, chemistry and physics: and I'm damn good at all of them. It's great for me and the kids lucky enough to be taught by me, but so many more would benefit immensely if I were in a classroom.
