Not having proportional representation effectively disenfranchises a large proportion of the population. In fact a mathematician can easily demonstrate that with our current system it's possible for the party with a significant majority of overall votes to not be the one taking the reigns of power. Actually it's far worse than this. Because if people didn't have the concept of a "wasted vote" many of them would vote differently. No wonder the two main parties don't want to change the system!
