  1. What is the probability that we will ever again (Thatcher had a chemistry degree) get a PM with a STEM, and not some Noddy one? I tutor all A-level maths topics, including further maths. I have in the past taught I.B. Diploma Higher level maths and given an intensive Easter revision course in it, that was very well received. I also do maths for fun, and have a large bookcase of maths books that include things like Galois Theory and Non-Euclidean Geometry. BUT I would NEVER seek to force students over 16 to do maths. If the subject is taught PROPERLY up to the age of 16 then forcing those who still don't get it to continue with maths really is flogging a dead horse. We all have things that others do with consummate ease, and that we just can't seem to manage, so we invest our time more productively on things that we can do well. Only idiots like Sunak fail to appreciate this.

  6. Here's an example of what's changed. A few years ago, instead of going to the expense of taking on a properly qualified maths teacher, St. Ignatius College, in Enfield, took on a trainee with an English degree. Of course this was deliberately hidden from the parents, and the headteacher was apoplectic when I spilled the beans. This kind of thing goes on in a great many schools!
