Alex, there's something deeply instinctual, and thus hard to rationalise or fight against. I don't know if it works differently for women, but the thought of another man having been with your woman is deeply repulsive and distressing to many men. It's roots lie in the fact that until very recently men have always had to worry about being cockolded into bringing up another man's offspring. Women don't have this deeply rooted inbuilt instinct because any child was always theirs. Even if you don't have, or intend to have, kids that powerful primeval instinct remains.
