Nigel, for A or A* even 25% is way too high. These grades are meant to distinguish outstanding candidates. Here's Gilbert and Sullivan explaining it to the simple minded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ie4OwwmFj8o When I took my A-levels well over 40 years ago they actually meant something: especially the higher grades. There was none of this A* nonsense, and only between 10% and 15% were awarded a grade A. However, if you really wanted to test your mettle, and stand out from the other A grades there were the scholarship papers, that you could take at the same time. These weren't even marked unless you got a grade A or B. Last year's grade inflation really stank, but this year is like having your head pushed deep into a cesspit. Kids deserve to be offed a challenge and the chance to distinguish themselves. This has been stolen from them.
