Dr. John you are absolutely right about the value of vaccines. My little yellow book is stamped with vaccines for typhoid, yellow fever and rabies, among others. So you are preaching to the converted.
But here's are the really big BUTs:
1. These vaccines protect from what are generally very serious diseases. As you yourself have demonstrated, and will no doubt do so again soon, covid-19 is no big deal for the vast majority of people.
2. Most vaccines undergo years of testing for both efficacy and effectiveness. The undeniable fact is that any vaccine for covid-19 will have been rushed through in less than one fifth of the normal time. OK, we've seen this before with Ebola, but Ebola poses a vastly higher risk to people.
3. A very important consideration is that most of us have zero trust in Boris Johnson, and his cabinet, and anything they tell us. They have gone out of their way to frighten people by grossly exaggerating the danger posed by covid-19, and deliberately encouraged people to believe that there is no long term immunity. Their propaganda campaign would have made Josef Goebbels extremely proud. Even in the light of recent research they have steadfastly refused to backtrack on anything they said, or in their incredibly damaging response to covid-19. So, UK government pushing a vaccine, and assuring people of its safety is about as counterproductive as it gets. If someone who you hated and strongly distrusted told you to put something into your body would you comply?
