  1. The attitude of the majority in some countries makes democracy in them nearly impossible, and this might be the case with Russia. Another good example is much of Africa, were tribalism, which is incompatible with democracy, is deeply engrained. This might be why expecting Putin to be overthrown by the general population is unrealistic. Someone powerful might well overthrow him, but which way they might lean is an open question. This is also why it's incredibly dangerous to show any weakness, or what might be interpreted as weakness, when dealing with Russia.
