When I taught in New Zealand it was a big deal if a kid swore at a teacher. Also, I was told that some kids with South Pacific islander parents were far more worried about their parents finding out about any punishment they received, than the punishment itself. Going back a lot further, I don't know if it was true, but it was said that in the Soviet Union a teacher could phone a misbehaving kid's parent's workplace and have their wages docked.
