Not only do we NOT ask for reparations from Italy, we treasure and preserve cities such as Bath. Not only do we NOT ask for reparations from the Danish, we treasure and preserve cities such as York. Not only do we NOT ask for reparations from France, we treasure and preserve our castles and cathedrals. Britain says NO to victim mentality!

@johnough4893 This is a fairly absurd response if you don't mind me saying so, in the context of things. I was hardly writing a thesis on architectural history, I was commenting on how different waves of invasion and overlordship have shaped our country. And our response to this as a people. Roman parts of Bath remain - we preserve and venerate them, despite them being relics of an oppressor class Viking parts of York remain - we preserve and venerate them, despite them being relics of an oppressor class Post Norman Cathedrals and castles remain, despite them being (in the case of castles) actual SYMBOLS of an oppressor class. I appreciate you'd like to exhibit your august historical credentials, but it misses the mark spectacularly in this particular comments section.

Lisa Nandy is FAR from stupid. She's actually one of the brighter politicians. So this makes the lie even worse.

@derryshore5586 No sh!t. Your point being? My take on that would be: lots of invasion, overlordship and colonisation has gone on throughout the world since forever. In fact by insisting on those further historical distinctions (that I'm already well aware of), you're effectively proving the greater point that my comment sought to make.

@Celtictribes Well said. In a nutshell.

@pauldh62 If this was a response to my post then you failed to discern it's essence. Spectacularly. I don't really know what to tell you other than that.

@stepbackandthink Good for them. Have a gold star.

@thepoliticalhousethatjackbuilt With qualifications in History and Law I'm perfectly satisfied my "grasp" of our nation's history is superior to yours. Thanks. You've chosen to ignore the essence of my point and focus instead on immaterial (not to mention fairly well known) distinctions between Normans and Norman French. Etc. Well done you.

@thepoliticalhousethatjackbuilt You're a reasonably nimble witness, but you're still wasting your time with meaningless distinctions. It's purely academic as far as this level of discussion goes. As though people in modern day Northern France don't have any connection with the Norman's who conquered Britain. Lol. I mean I suppose we could ask France to divest itself of Normandy so we could pursue a spurious reparations claim against the perpetrators descendants but I don't imagine there'd be much appetite for that from Paris. Well the same level of nonsense applies when you expect modern day Britons to compensate Caribbeans for slavery. Or perhaps you'd like to pick Indian and Pakistani Britons pockets to foot the bill? A double colonial whammy for them. Lol. We're a very diverse society these days in case you hadn't noticed (in your middle class white ghetto). Get a grip.

@johnough4893 My "errors' weren't material to the point being made. Moreover, they weren't errors at all, they were deliberate shorthand. Why on God's green earth would I embark on a thorough chronology in a YouTube comments section? It's self evident York existed before the Vikings etc etc etc. It was obviously just an opportunity for you to say something you thought sounded clever about the Normans etc. Things which practically everyone knows anyway. Lol. Well done you!

@johnough4893 I didn't say I had a degree in law. I do happen to have a degree in law (in addition to post graduate professional qualifications in law). Re: my 'standard' of English, I reiterate that this is a YouTube comments section. We are not in the High Court of Justice so my knock about prose shall suffice. Elegantly. I'm sorry you were incapable of resisting the temptation to sound clever. I am of course indebted to you, Sir, for your breathtaking treatise on the Normans. Yours etc.

@johnough4893 Zip it, tinsel t!ts.

@kooringagnd Well said. It's this type off confounding nonsense that lies at the very heart of the standard lefty exculpatory argument. You'll note it's only ever Britain (consistently) that should have to pay reparations. Italy-for instance-shouldn't have to do so because Italy didn't exist at the time of the Roman Empire. Okay then, very convenient. In that case-in lieu of reparations, might we as Britains alternatively ask that they completely bulldoze the Coliseum and all other remnants of their history. After all, to an enslaved Brit, they're offensive symbols of oppression. They may pre-date "Italy" but they are literally national symbols of Italy and Italy glorifies them. Only of course we wouldn't ask for them to do that because it'd be both barbaric and stupid. We're reasonable people who understand the past and what it means.
