@RCAvhstape it can also be thought of as a side-effect of a society which underfunds such things, rich people become the only funding source left. It's especially sinister when U see rich people being the ones lobbying for those funding reductions in the first place - setting up the system how they want it 😑. I'm honestly not sure if Gates qualifies as this, I'd kinda doubt it since a lot of his interests (public health) have notably bad outcomes when private industries are in control, & he seems to be a pretty data oriented guy.

@bluephoenixguy1094 -i doubt Teflon would ever be used for these purposes.- Yes it's colloquially known to handle household "high temps", -but that's a far cry from liquid sodium temps & not long term in a system where U want to minimise maintenance.- IIRC Teflon starts degrading at only a few hundred degrees C. I'd have to recheck Edit: oh wow, I forgot that Sodium has an incredibly low melting point (under 100C!) nevermind then! 😅 I must have gotten it mixed up with molten salt.

Yeah 😔. I mean these days there are legit reasons not to go nuclear, mostly economical (renewables are simply cheaper thesedays). But I'll always love nuclear as a tech, and these sorts of research/pilot plants are a necessity - simply for the research/development potential alone. We'll likely need more & more of this tech as we venture further up in space.

I love it, but I hope it doesn't take funding away from renewables which are already solving the problem as we speak (ie: WAY past building experimental pilot plants). It's great that Gates is involved. Rich guy who seems to have his head screwed on correctly.

@Johan88k Scaling it up makes the problem go away, since a larger grid means more varied weather & less chance of no sun&wind anywhere.

@Johan88k "For example if the energy production in the EU..." There we go, yes, the EU! The EU is a big enough land area that Dunkelflaute is unlikely to effect the entire area at once. > "...immense political challenge..." hmm, if only there were an.... wait there is indeed already an EU, Perfect!! 🤓👍 With a common fossil energy enemy too 😗👌, thx Vlad

@Johan88k Man that sucks. Yeah here in Australia the landmass is (less than EU landmass🤔) enough to make Dunkelflaute not a problem. Just gotta connect those grids!
