@MatsMinds ah i see. So it's more that... we should have ways of creating these structures and buildings that doesn't deplete resources. It looks like it's mostly created of steel, concrete and plastic. yeah i suppose it's a valid point. It'd take a lot more planning to make it absolutely zero impact, it may even be worth doing. But i'd hate to see the project procrastinated into oblivion while striving after such perfection. I'd rather see something built now, and treat it as a step.

@MatsMinds They could be made of Mylar. Much like the inflated plastic film roof of the biodome. also: concentrated-solar furnaces can melt glass to make mirrors.

@Jotto999 but if the desert is reforested - it will destroy the habitat of that water condensing beetle :(

@MatsMinds plastic can be made from various renewables as well. i don't think he said anywhere in the video that he's going to be dropped in the desert naked, and he needs to build all his own tools, harvest all of his energy (starting with nothing!) and then create these things from scratch. He didn't say that. We CAN use already existing tools to create these things to reach our goals. It will take energy to create. They won't break-even instantly, no investment does that.

@RickeyRamone the beetle flies towards forrest fires, from upto 80kms away. I think fire is necessary for it to breed or something.

@UnconformistSheep i'm not really sure this is considered to be "alternative", what other options are there? It's a desert... I guess you can migrate to somewhere that ISN'T a desert, lol.

@dookiecheez you know where this project would take off? Dubai. It has the desert/beach landscape, the money, and the will power. Perfect place to start

@PVanderston black both absorbs and radiates heat faster than any other colour. at night there is no sunlight to absorb, so the black just radiates heat away from itself very efficiently.

@UnconformistSheep they sound technologically simple. seawater evaporators, solar concentrators, greenhouses. They sound expensive because you can append GIANT to the front of all of them. GIANT solar concentrators, GIANT seawater evaporators. The scale he's inevitably talking about is epic. It would be best to start small somewhere as a seed project, then gradually expand only as you can.

@Jotto999 your decision to forest over deserts is objective, but my same decision to forest over deserts is irrational? hehe. Anyway my point was that value is subjective. Really what we're trying to do is create a planet better suited for OUR needs - human needs. "I don't like desert ecosystems, so fuck deserts". It boils down to selfish self-interest, but i'm ok with that. Or to put it another way: "The planet is fine... the people are fucked." - George Carlin. watch?v=tNobFi3Q-9Y

@Jotto999 But you're still forcing your subjective values on things. To say that anything is better for "the planet" you have to presume to know some kindof overarching goal that the planet is striving towards. But you know no such thing! So many assumptions: - humans are good for the planet? - biodiversity is good for the planet? (remember that evolution WILL fill in all new niche gaps) - life is good for the planet? - heat is good for the planet? So no, as yet i still don't understand you
1
@Jotto999 Who are you to say that a forest ecosystem is "better" than a desert ecosystem? Better for who, for you? "Fuck YOU" says that beetle, "what about ME?!". They are both ecosystems. By building a forest you are DESTROYING a fully functional desert ecosystem. Sure - i don't like deserts either and would gladly forest over them. But don't kid yourself that you're doing the planet a favor by doing so, to create one habitat you will destroy another.
