You mention renting houses as normal, but there are political/economic movements that flare up every now & again calling for all house & land renting to be abolished. eg: "Land Value Tax". When you rent land from a landlord, they typically add little to no value to the equation. They are rent-seeking parasites.

0:48 approx 22% of China's entire urban housing is UNoccupied (ie: only 78% is occupied). 7:53 90% of homes in China are owned by their residents. How can 90% of homes be owned by their residents, if only 78% of (urban) homes even HAVE residents? I guess the "urban" descriptor is the key. In non-urban areas the % of homes owned by residents must be much higher than 90% (perhaps 95%+), and this offsets the low 78% occupancy figure for urban homes, to end up with 90% of homes being resident-owned for all of China (urban & non-urban). Tho i do wonder what the % is of urban homes that are resident owned. We know it's less than 78%, but how much less.
