i prefer to use brackets (with italics to make it clear at a glance if you're in a bracketed or non-bracketed part. Incase there's a lot of them). It might be something i picked up from math or programming. Bob, a DJ, and a puppy. Bob (a DJ) and a puppy. To be honest it doesn't matter. Anyone who insists English has rigid rules is an idiot and not worth your time (unless you're studying idiots). It's a dynamic language. Always changing, evolving, branching, never static.
