Like any accident, in hindsight it was avoidable. That is what makes it so tragic. Everyone is looking for someone to blame but sadly it may just always be what it was. A horrible tragedy.

@ArronP Also, Kobe was a stickler for being on time (yes, I know first hand). With so many commitments, plus a family, it was a smart decision to purchase his own private helicopter. LA traffic doesn't care who you are or how important you are--sometimes it just makes you late. Something Kobe could not abide. He took all his commitments seriously. And I doubt we will ever know, but he could have said he didn't want to be late, and if there was even a chance of getting there safely, perhaps the pilot felt pressure to agree to take off. I certainly hope that was not the case, for many reasons. And while it never makes sense, I agree that when it is your time to go, it's your time. It is not us to question why...

Isn't it more likely that Kobe asked the pilot he knew and trusted for years, who asked for the special permission to fly and was granted it, and then they decided to go ahead based on the information given to them? No one got on that copter Sunday wanting to die, including the pilot, who, when ASKING for permission, trusted those who "could see farther" and knew their flight path, and ultimately granted it to them.

@ladycacti6408 24 was his last retired jersey. The Spurs and the Raptors set a 24 second shot clock countdown for their moment of silence in memory of Kobe at their game. I presume he meant it to be in his honor.

@ArronP I also immediately thought of JFK Jr. when this happened. However the comments here are misguided and misinformed. Kobe had been traveling via his personal copter--a twin engine luxury model of which there were only 1,000 made. Used by the military, medical crew and corporate VIP's for similar reasons. He had a longtime, experienced pilot and only traveled with him. There is NO way Kobe could have accomplished all that he did in life without it, considering the distances he had to travel daily in LA traffic. We still have yet to hear the report and what really happened but the fog here was awful Sunday morning. Even LAPD had grounded their helicopters. However that Kobe used a helicopter to travel and therefore spend more time with his family was a very smart decision (very different than the JFK Jr. situation all around, but that was equally devastating at the time.).

@BBoiiLite You are right. NONE of us know what he was thinking. What I can tell you for sure is that Kobe likely said "I don't want to be late for the game." He would never be late. What happened beyond that will remain a mystery.
