@illuminatedperspectives2894 Why should she get royalties? A business deal was made at the time that she agreed to. Similar to the 3M guy with the post-it notes.

It is not the responsibility of a company to erect a headstone. And who would want it to be??

And a great way for kids to learn the story as they learn how to read! Just as we all read the backs of cereal boxes growing up!

@Hibiscus Syriacus Although being a black model back then was an achievement in itself. And they did all get paid. Not what they would have gotten today, but they were all either paid for their work, or the recipe was purchased after she won at the State fair.

Willie Gordon And I could make you a long, similar list, such as buying Google or Apple went it went public of shoulda, woulda, if I had only known scenarios that are just the same. Everything is transactional and a risk on both sides. Who knew what would come of a random recipe??

@tanjonzou9840 Why is that "the right thing to do?" It ready went to the courts and the family lost. There are probably public records available. But statute of limitations aside, everyone is focused solely on the perspective of the story relative to the standards, beliefs and viewpoints of the current era. She was a paid model and then business woman, a huge accomplishment for a woman of ANY color in that era. Why is everyone trying to take that away from her? I am sure she was very proud of her accomplishments. She was paid for her work--and paid well at the time--she was not abused or forced to do anything she did not want to. On what basis do you feel she should receive reparations?

@PinkyPuff69 Ah! Exactly! You are proving my point. A different person during a different time. But you are forgetting about the Zeitgeist. First, as with any business venture, when you are purchasing or investing in an unproven product with no track record, there is always risk involved, which is part of what determines the price. Patents have been around for over 200 years. But Alan Amron and the 3M story is one of most famous stories of IP law. And part of the case was not just about who invented the product, but who was being credited for it. Does Amron deserve more money just bc he wants all the credit for the invention, 40 years later, now that his product is an everyday item for everyone in the world? It certainly wasn't when he first tried to sell the product. Hindsight is 20/20. And all of the questions you bring up are based on the viewpoint of the current world we live in. We can't apply them to a situation that happened over 100 years ago. One has to take the Zeitgeist of the era into account in order to understand it. And we certainly can't use the Zeitgeist of 2020 to judge the people and the actions of Nancy Green!

@Badside936 Not being cruel. I have read up on the topic and know what happened at the time and how. People are not getting the whole story. Look into it and see what you think.

So glad they made this story! And yet only 900 people care enough to say something about it?? There is a lot going on in this country and it is not about peace in the world, but there should be a "Save Aunt Jemima" movement!!!
