  1.  @DigitalSteel  Capping it at $5 million is already cutting Flint off at the knees. Just do the math on the cost of the workers and you will see that $5 million is not sufficient. Let alone all the additional costs of FEMA, as well as the cost to the city, county and State to determine the cause, effect and the correction of the problem so that it doesn't happen again.

  2.  @DigitalSteel  Nor do you need to, as I see that the rest of this thread has already touched on many of the costly long-term issues that befell Flint, aside from the immediate costs that had to be taken into account by FEMA, which clearly were expected to exceed $5 million, lest they would not have capped it!

  3. I don't know how she does it! I just spent 12 hrs watching the hearings and she smiled only a handful of times, but honestly did not even flinch once otherwise. Even during Harris, Blumenthal, Hirono. It was astounding. If she can do that, she can overlook anything.

  4.  @joyhock190  Thanks, but I still do not, however, share the same beliefs you do. I respect the fact that you believe what you believe, just as I respect those who choose to believe nothing. But I also like peoplewho are true to their faith, whatever it may be. Just as I think those who claim to be atheists are not being honest (hence my earlier post). Especially as many of them don't even know the difference between atheists and agnostics anymore. But those are 2 separate and individual beliefs of mine. Many lump them together unfortunately.

I just wish that "most Americans"--all who have the power to vote--would atleast be smart enough to google something like Coyote before they post some stupid comment on Twitter thinking the President meant actual Coyotes! Don't get involved in an immigration debate if you have no clue what it is all about! Ie., drug mules, Coyotes...yet they are certain the Biden/Harris will be better for our country! I watched it first in French, and then watched it again with subtitles, which are usually poorly done, but I thought that it may have made a difference in the impression that it left. Nope. Everyone commenting with outrage clearly has not seen the film. It also has nothing to do with politics yet somehow everyone wants to politicize it. THAT is what is disturbing. People don't even want to become informed and come to their own conclusions anymore?

  14. Yes, well, sometimes people steal. And if you don't have a human involved, then the surveillance should not be biased. And yes it is all very scary. But we opened Pandora's box with the development of the internet. Then AI was created. And now everyone wants to trust that people will only use it for good and then ignore the fact that they can use it for quality control or theft prevention bc that may then perceived as bad? In 5-10 years it will be completely normal (once regulated), and people will forget/laugh at the fact that this was even a conversation.

  15. We pay less in taxes than most Europeans do--or countries with socialized medicine. We have free education, but not free higher education. We also have low income housing, just as Europeans do, for those who need financial assistance and help with housing. Which is paid for by taxes from those in a higher tax bracket.

I don't know what world this woman lives in (with such high mask compliance), but I know tons of really smart people (many of them are DOCTORS!), and they are not compliant bc they still look at the statistics and the morbidity rate, and think the flu is worse. And then I have staff who don't understand the virus, or the situation the country is in, because they still have their jobs, and they have been saying they are compliant, but then you see them out and about (via Insta) with others, or taking their masks off behind my back, bc they are so Covid weary. One can't trust the general public. Everyone just needs to act responsibly themselves and NOT assume the other person does the same.

  21.  @bradleysmith681  Not exactly true, but regardless, it is not about how someone starts out, yet how they end up. If any of his decisions have actually made a negative difference in your life over all the years he was a government "servant", then you have a right to be angry. But without stating what those actions were and how you were negatively affected, it is a non-starter. There are plenty of people in the world who ask for a recommendation--which can range from anything to a letter, a phone call or a favor--and then clearly ask the person who will have the most clout. It doesn't matter if it was one's 10th grade math teacher or the President who is writing the recommendation--everyone does it. The job or the school even asks for it. The applicant is not to blame. That is just how the system works!

  22.  @bradleysmith681  Not at all. But whatever may have been handed to him was done so 25 years ago. And he has worked hard ever since. Knowing the effort he has put into everything he has done, all while deciding to work for the government rather than continue in the private sector, I think he deserves some credit for that. He may have been given a leg up, but that was only to the benefit of the people he serves.

He would not have achieved as much as he did without hard work. Just as his bars, restaurants and wineries would not have excelled without his commitment and the quality of his hard working staff. You can ask anyone from the Triangle to the North Bay and they would all agree.

And as to the "spoiled brat rich kids"--which of them are you referring to? And what makes them spoiled or brats for that matter? The French Laundry has been open for years. There are plenty of people who can afford to eat there. It is not such a big deal for most people who live in SF or its environs. Why should anyone care how people choose to spend their money? And lobbyists have very strict rules as to how they can spend the lobby's money. It is all also public record what they spend on, so it is not the big conspiracy that you think it is. They just went out to dinner. It is the media who has made a big deal out of it and you are falling right into their trap.

And is it so offensive to you how someone gets their start in life regardless of what they then do with their life thereafter? None of your idols had a leg up somewhere along the way? Willie Brown cares way too much about his reputation (and now, likely, his legacy), to help someone who will not perform and do well in any position he helps someone attain (and he is a lovely, decent human being btw). Just as Gavin would not have gotten as far in life without everything he did for the city. I, personally, cannot claim to be as virtuous as either of them as I would not have (did not) leave my life, my family, my business es, in order to take a huge payout and work as a government employee. Even if it would have looked great on paper and there would have been tremendous bragging rights, I prefer to be able to eat at The French Laundry whenever I want, in private. So, while Gavin is now getting crap for one dinner gone wrong, he is still, in my eyes, a better person than I. Is he full of himself? Absolutely. Does he think he is better than most? Probably. But I can also attest to the fact that he likely is. He was and likely still is and the people who keep attacking him either have some personal beef with him, or they are just jealous. There is no other rational answer. The people writing comments to strangers on YT to "storm the Bastille" are clearly not actually starving as the French were during the Revolution or even during the Terror. Our generation of woke revolutionaries are misguided, misinformed and honestly, pathetic!

  28. One should only condemn the movie if they have watched it. People are being completely misled as to what it is about. In fact I was shocked when I watched it. And angry. We have politicized every conversation in America (and the film is not even an American movie. It is in French and takes place in the Paris suburbs). And it is right on the money as far as the points the movie makes. It is absolutely worth watching.

  40. Only 3 replies at this point, so answering all in one... I haven't gotten to the "people losing their minds" in the media/world yet, but I am sure it is there, LOL! I want to watch it but it will make me even more twitchy than I am these days raising 3 teenage girls. I think I get it. Not sure I need to see it to feel uncomfortable with the comments that bothered me...because...as she says, it is all already over TikTok (and if one hasn't seen that, they should!!). But some of the things she mentioned are thing we would see on this Netflix program, but NOT on the selection of TikToks that our kids choose to show us (mine happen to tell me which grosses me out enough, and they know it is inappropriate, so I don't need/want to watch). They love freaking me out at the dinner table as we discuss them... and they can't really leave the house, so I don't make that big of a deal right now...I am picking my battles, as we all are I am sure.

Especially for the tweens and teens. All four of mine show them to me all the time. Mostly to shock me and make me crazy.
