This is something new. If someone has a doctorate, they are a Dr. and deserve to be called by their title. After someone spends all those years (and money) in school studying, and have earned their title, use it! They didn't make up the rules. No one needs to have a meltdown over it, and we certainly don't need to write articles or spend time discussing it, but this should not be yet another victim of cancel culture.

@oscaralvarado2899 No, there are plenty of Doctors who are not Physicians (which what I think you mean when you say Medical Doctor). Dentists, Veterinarians, even podiatrists. A lawyer, who doesn't have a designation in front of his name, but rather, uses Esq. (For esquire) after his name, is still considered a J.D., or Juris Doctor (Doctor of Jurisprudence). The background of the words are rooted in Latin and they still differ from country to country in there present usage and meaning. Even in the US, for a Veterinarian, the general standard degree one earns after 4 years of postgraduate school is a DVM. However U of Penn (one of the top Vet Schools in the world), still confers their graduates with a VMD, as they continue to use the traditional Latin with their graduates. Nonetheless, it still indicates that one is a Teacher (translating from the Latin) of the subject who has earned the highest level of studies within their field.

@denverbritto5606 Yes, sounds reasonable. Older generations in the US are slightly more formal and use Dr./Mr./Mrs. In the beginning, until told to do otherwise. In Germany and France, one uses the formal form of you, along with one's official title, even when one tells you different. And for invitations and mailings, we use Dr. & Mrs, when not using her first & his first then last name. Very standard.

@zachydrogeo As someone with 3 family members in engineering (mechanical, chemical and industrial), I agree that it won't guarantee you anything, but it will definitely give you a leg up! And yes... you get to call yourself a DR and be proud about it!

@zachydrogeo Keep it up! It will be worth it in the end (and help pay your bills!). Everything is soul sucking right now--we are all in the same boat. Atleast you have something positive to look forward to. The light at the end of the tunnel. (And you better be up to your thesis, bc I don't have a better pep talk for that one!). Good luck!!
