And she knows that! Why did she leave her husband behind? That is really strange.

@Luaxon I will admit that it is annoying to watch tourists yell at people in English even louder hoping that they will understand. Although English has become the English standard... I am very glad I am good at languages. They are so fun! Quick story, we took my 4 kids to Italy, sat down to eat something and and I ordered in Italian. The waiter leaves and my son says "Now you speak Italian too?? I just shrugged. (I only took one year of it, so I don't count it as one of the 5 languages I speak). I can order and get directions, but it was still amusing!

No one does. The people are just scared puppets. And they are all dying to get out. It is very rare that they can get a visa to travel. It is a very detailed, difficult process.

@Luaxon Are you Canadian??

@Luaxon Granted, I am in the minority. But I learned German and French in HS (and one year of Italian, so I can get around and order in a restaurant, etc.). Then majored in German and French in College and studied abroad and now speak them fluently. I had to teach myself Spanish when we moved to LA. I have 4 kids who are learning 2 languages in HS and it depends on the kid. Some picked them up quickly and other struggled. Everyone has their strengths (I was terrible at math and science). But yes, in general, Americans are not great at second languages. And when they travel they assume everyone speaks English. Which they do in Europe. So they don't even make an effort to use the little they learned.

@Luaxon No. Canadians all learn French as a second language and speak it well. Even after 4 years of HS french. And they tend to make fun of Americans bc we don't typically produce bilingual kids when the graduate (they start earlier). Tho Californians tend to learn Spanish and then continue to use it, which is key. Just as Canadians continue to use French. I speak 5 languages--if you don't use it and continue to practice, it is easy to lose what you have learned.

@alinag3831 You can go to China anytime. Very few people speak English, even in the hotels. Same is true in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc. Go and say whatever you want, lol, no one will understand you. It is extremely frustrating in Asia (and very difficult to get around or sightsee). Book a car and driver (especially in Beijing). That helps. Even more so if you are blonde.

Our borders are closed to China. How did she get in? Why did she leave her husband behind? I hope what she has to say is true. She doesn't have much to gain otherwise.
