@My Random Life Although I don't see this as political. It is a case of right vs. wrong. Good vs. evil. Humanity vs. Brutality. Plain and simple. And that is how I will teach it to my children when we sit down to dinner tonight and discuss it. They are white, privileged teenagers living in one of the most expensive zip codes in the nation (albeit still minorities). I don't want them to see it as political and I agree that the riots devolve the discussion at hand. The riots that occurred take the focus away from the discussion, which is a shame. But it IS a necessary discussion to have as I feel it is my responsibility to raise my 4 children in a way that they will be prepared to venture out into the world with the right perspective. Which brings me back to teaching then right from wrong. And another perfect example is Cooper vs. Cooper.

Joyce Duncan Reread what you wrote and then ask yourself if that could be viewed as racist in itself. Not every Black person is good and kind. Just as not every white person is good and kind. Racism starts with a label. Until we all see oneanother as Americans (Or Canadians, French, etc.), we won't be able to move forward.
