  1. ​​@vitriolveio Good points. Work first of all on yourself, keep romance going. Maintain good friendships& independence in dependence. If there are issues too difficult to deal with in the marriage, seek good counselling. I know a couple who have been married for over 50 years. I know them from visiting them as a volunteer. The lady has dementia. She is in her early 90ties, her husband is almost 90. They look after each other. They don't look beautiful anymore, their health is deteriorating. What remains is laughter, real love & respect. They never looked for a divorce. Such an example of faithfulness & ability to love deeply. They are very real, kind, good people.

  2. Sadly, l can see these arrangements amongst separated or divorced couples in my practice. Yes, it is more like an uncle's role than a father's role when it comes to rising kids. My parents divorced when my siblings and l were young adults, but it still brought a havoc in the family. It brings so many complex, difficult emotional issues and so much hurt. I think what is crucial is to work on a marriage, even in counselling, work on yourself before getting a divorce, which is sometimes necessary, sadly, due to too serious disfunction of one of the spouses.
