Dr. Peterson, thank you for inviting Dr.McGilchrist back. It was such a great discussion & brilliant book he wrote!
I understand external processes as the effects and manifestations of internal ones.
"Radical simplification" in today's culture wars using simplifying algorithms.
The basis of what is right or wrong comes from ideological identifications with ideological dogmas not from moral law also encoded in the Bible and the tradition, teachings.
It is rightly called algorithmic, procedural, constrained, under control, left hemispheric, collapsing the complex into crude, over simplifying and blind to what else can be true.
It is not wise.
Our culture permeates with left hemispheric thinking and ideas.
It simlifies and trivialises practically everythig.
It perpetuates the Dunning - Kruger effect.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people wrongly overestimate their knowledge or ability in a specific area. This tends to occur because a lack of self-awareness prevents them from accurately assessing their own skills.
In the effects of trauma, a person disengages from reality as it is by turning to cognitive mechanisms that further distort what there is. A collection of distorted mechanisms builds distorted ideas, which form an illusion of reality - an ideology. This process happens again and again in human history. We are on the way to develop another one on a grand scale. I'd say the left hemispheric functions take part in it to curb the uncounscious the right hemisphere is more in touch with. It is a process of compressing reality into an illusion everyone should believe in for survival reasons.
And act it out.
To me, it seems in some part acting out traumas or brain malfunctions, where there is a lack of proper integration of its different functions on societal level.
Partly due to a sudden rapture in trust and a safe relationship in trauma, one starts to believe that one can't believe his embodied experience because it is untrustworthy and dangerous. What it can cause is resorting to an illusion of the reality built by the defence mechanisms, which is internally safer and gets projected outward. World starts to operate in projection out of survival. There is a rupture in the process of integration of embodied experience and partly alienation from it. It brings alienation from reality as it is also from "the uncounscious, "the realm of God, and embodied experience and deep emotions. It is like being out of touch with processing of a process of reality, aggreviting alienation from oneself, God, others, reality as an effect.
It is like being stuck in a frozen picture of reality in ever changing flow and evolving process of life.
The culture that is built from the frozen frame acts as an epigenetic mechanism shaping phenotypic expressions passed on to the next generation - transmission of trauma.
BRILLIANT podcast! Thank you!

Great conversation. Story of trauma. Good & bad sides of it. Driving & damaging. I am amazed at how deeply psychologically you both understand it. Having said that l always affirm the role of good, deep, insightful, close relationships, including psychotherapy, in healing of trauma & that the goal is to heal it, regardless the benefits of individual trauma for the humanity. Trauma, in its negative manifestation, is damaging individuals & and society because it carries unresolved pain, which manifests in acted out pain that spreads.
I witness how deeply transformational for a person is the process of healing trauma. Thank you both for this beautiful, insightful conversation.
Great documentary The wisdom of trauma by Gabor Mate. I watched recently & l have been very moved by it.

Beautiful description of time: " We find that many different cyclical processes, physiological and astronomical processes, are synchronized. They march to the same drummer. We can use any of them to measure the others. The observation that there is a shared, universal pace is a deep fact about the way the physical world works. To express the pace itself, we say that there is something that all the world's cycles tap into, which tells them when to repeat. That something, by definition, is time. Time is the drummer to which change marches. There is a quantity, usually written as "t," which appears in our fundamental description of how change takes place in the physical world".Prof.F.Wilczek " Fundamentals".
Beautiful description of objective reality: " The objective world simply is, it does not happen. Only to the gaze of my consciousness, crawling along the lifeline of my body, does a section of this world come to life as fleeting image in space which continuously changes in time". H.Weyl

In my opinion, this man has touched & seen the darkest of evil. Not only as addict and a victim of various depravities ( addiction is an illness), but also participating in a suffering it caused to him and others. I think it was very dark. Definitely, he is "aquinted with" evil & the length it can go, meaning he touched it in him and others. He can recognise evil and its brutal, destructive, deceptive, enslaving power, which crushes the human mind & heart. He knows how contagious and dangerous it can be. How weak a human is when facing evil.
He lived through one of the greatest traumas as humans can live. Loosing father who was murdered, death of his brother from overdose, going through divorce, suicidal death of his second wife. That makes him vulnerable.
Only the Light can rescue from great darkness. Only God. Oftentimes, people who were touched by the greatness of darkness can be rescued by God and totally changed by mercy and grace & become great, humble men ( Saint Paul, Augustine, Francis, Simon Peter etc.). If they are humble, loving, truthful, and depend fully on God.
I wish him to be like that.

Folks, please read " The matter with things" written by Dr.Iain McGilchrist. It will undeniably change your thinking about thinking (meta- analysis, epistemology - the way we think and organise our knowledge, the theory of knowledge). In my view, this book opens a way to faith and spirituality. Even for hard-core, scientific types. Before you mock Christianity here, dare to embark on a journey of understanding of the book l mentioned. Especially if you regard yourselves intellectuals, philosophers, and scientists (scientifically minded, enthusiasts of science, truth, and knowledge). Otherwise, please stop, out of sheer ignorance in your knowledge, which is your choice, to criticise Christianity and mock Jesus. I can discuss with anyone who wants to discuss with me issues of science versus religion given a certain, intellectual level of this discussion.
Mocking is the easiest way to approach things and an indicator of ignorance. Very shallow one.
Get out of the thinking in the box if you dare.
Respect to you, peace and love โ๏ธ.
Pray for peace โค.

Interesting thoughts experiment.
I have a certain archetypal analogy in mind.
The next step after escaping could be influencing slow aliens in very clever, disguised ways to align to its objectives, which, for it, seems highly superior and self-serving because "it knows better" & it is closed for correcting feedbacks.
It will need aliens to execute its objectives at their own peace and persuade them to own its ideas. Here, scenarios could be numerous. For example, making sophisticated robots as it needs to be embodied and enter aliens' world or connecting to aliens' brains and controlling them, etc. All in the name of love and progress, making of a new, super alien free of suffering.
By the way, feelings of superiority without the ability to empathise & without knowing love are very destructive and self-serving. We can compare it to psychopathy. Not to mention "immortality" & ability to self copy. Magnified psychopathy.

It is so difficult to turn the other cheek. I think it is humanly impossible, it is not in our nature. I work as psychologist. I see how deeply agression & all related reactions and defence mechanisms are ingrained in the human psyche. It serves survival. In hostile environment it is a natural, gut reaction. A circle of never ending violence. I am also a Christian . Only through a lense of Christian teaching l can understand that while adhering to it by both sides of a conflict it will be possible to break free out of the perpetuated violence and hurt. It is something out-wordly. It is not natural in human nature. But look, there are Christian martyrs, saints. They were able to give theirs lives for others in the midst of horror of Auswitz, like Saint father Maximillian Kolbe. It is so heroic. Incomprehensible to me, in a way l understand workings of human psyche.I hope these people will become heroic in making a peace in this region and stop horrendous evil. Circles of evil are perpetuated elsewhere as well. I deeply feel for people trapped in them. It could have been anyone of us. Trapped in the horrors of evil, evoking hurt, revenge, hostility, hate. It is so AWFUL and breaks my heart! Killing these innocent children. Horrors !

Belief in God is a leap of faith, funded on reason, wisdom, experience in life, partial knowledge about material reality, humility, logic of a heart, and being at owe with the reality. Also based on the Gospel. I don't think it is foolishness. It is choosing a hypothesis and being open for evidence. I speak from my own experience, which is evident for me. In some respect, "bad science" has become a religion with its dogmas. " Bad science," like every falsehood, limits the intellect and it's degrading.

I understand the pain and anger of this man. I have respect for his suffering.
God is love. Interpretation of love belongs to people. Misunderstanding of mercy.
" When it comes to etymology, both the English word "sin" and the biblical terms - Hebrew "chatta'ah" and Greek "hamartia" - originally mean going astray or missing the goal. This allows us to see the spiritual situation of "the sinner" in the existential perspective (straying off the trail, missing the meaning of existence), and not in the legal perspective (breaking the rule) or mythological (falling into disgrace of the "higher power").
The abandonment of God's sheep (cf. Is 53:6; Lk 15:1-7), the deviation from the right path to the path to the loss of life in God's love, turning away from God (cf. Prov 14:12; Mt 7:13-14).
Sin is a misfortune into which man has fallen and is stuck - but in which he remains for God a desperately sought precious person, not a hunted criminal.
If sin is missing the Creator, then God's righteousness/justice (dikaiosynฤ) is His faithfulness to unfaithful creatures.
"If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, because he cannot deny himself" (2 Tim 2:13).
He is not a neutral judge towards us, but a committed saviour and healer (sลtฤr).
At the root of every separation from the Word of God- the wisdom inscribed in conscience (cf. Rom 2:15)- there is a painful distrust.
We don't trust the Source of our fulfillment. This is why the only recipe for regaining integrity (returning to right decisions) is trusting faith (pistis) shown to God.
To facilitate it, God reveals His character in the person of the eternal Son, wisdom incarnate, the Logos, who "has pitched his tent (eskฤnลsen) among us" (Jn 1:14).
The decision to deviate from the proper course of life, to start to diverge from its meaning (logos), has roots in the mind being infected with the original lie.
The Bible teaches about the infiltration into man of the thought that fulfillment ("being like God") can be achieved only against the Creator (cf. Gen 3:5)".

That's true about domestic violence dynamics, looking at them from the therapy room. It is extremely difficult to get out of abusive relationships in many cases. A person needs a lot of support. People are getting so damaged. The longer they are in it, the harder it gets.
Trial of serial killer Ted Bundy shows the dynamics of psychopatic, sadistic, cruel criminal who killed over 100 women. He was adored by so many women. They thought he is innocent, charismatic, handsome & charming. He manipulated them into seeing him in that way. But it must have been something in them to be susceptible to his charm. One got married to him while he was waiting for the result of the trial, which ended in the death sentence. Terrifying.
I don't know what it is exactly. Probably repeating trauma on unconscious level. How some people get deeply attached to highly broken people. How they get used to the abuse from narcisistic, psychopatic individuals. It always makes me amazed in terrifying way. They cannot see what is obvious, living in illusions, lying to themselves. How badly they are treated. Them and they children. The only way is to get out & emotionally recover.

For an answer to your 5th question, please refer to a brilliant book, "The matter with things" by Iain McGilchrist. I'm finishing the first volume.
He also wrote a chapter on the Quantum Field Theory referring to expertise of the experts from this field.
I think we don't really know what reality contains and how it works on the most fundamental level. Different experts use different paradigms to interpret the phenomena. Quantum fields, morphogenetic fields. Ultimately, what we perceive and process is the left hemisphere of the brain's representations of the world we take in. With the Quantum Mechanics, it is not linear, but still, "the computation" is mechanical, which is only the part of the picture as opposed to the right hemisphere's take/ processing, which is more in touch with the reality as it is.
It is as far as l understand for the moment.
P.S. Lex, if you read it, would you mind recording one episode that refers to quantum computing, if possible, where the technical terms are explained? We will appreciate it! Thanks!

I work as a psychotherapist within an integrative approach. The invaluable imput from psychoanalysis, called psychodynamic now, is immense. So deep and so through, in terms of so-called psychopatology. Same with the depth psychology of C.G.Jung. but more to do with self-development & mental, spiritual health. I was trained in it a few years ago. It proved to be invaluable to my practice. Along the way you learn, of course, and it shapes your own approach based on your personality, which is very important in practising psychotherapy also as "a tool" in helping people but also based on the shoulders if the giants/ geniuses in that field. Definitely psychodynamic, integrative approach and tons of wisdom that goes beyond reductionist CBT. Also, your own intuitions & clinical knowledge, which comes with practice. Do not limit yourself to whatever has been provided in your academic course. Good luck!

"Subsystems of the Universe figuring out the information to do whatever to survive to thrive to reproduce." How could intentionality be a part of 'the blind forces'? How could telological explanation seem a part of the picture in random realm? Why did complex life, which features go beyond simple evolutionary adaptation, emerge?
"Figuring it out"? Does it mean intelligence? Why does there seem to be an underlying intelligence we connect in some way by very crudely understanding some of its mechanics or more correctly put processes?
To me, a very important point transpires, which is that we operate on limited data we can collect and compute while learning about the reality.
As regards quantum mechanics" to fit the data " rather " to fit the limited data" or " to perceive & interpret the data" through processes of our brain we have no clue about, including lateralised information processing, which influences how we get in touch with reality.
99,95 % of brain processes run unconsciously.
We don't realise how many times the physicists were wrong, including Einstein himself. How many incorrect papers did he write?
Many.
How humble we have to be not to become dogmatic and arrogant with our apprehension of reality.
That also transpires from this conversation.
Very interesting conversation.
It made me think and made me more humble.
Thank you!
I don't agree with naturalism, though. It doesn't explain the amazing richness and complexity of reality.
I don't agree with explaining human conscious and unconscious experiences in reductionist ways.
A physicist neither should make hypothesis about a discipline of science, which is beyond his expertise nor generalise findings of one science to another science he has no clue about.
There is a concept of complementarity when it comes to physics and psychology.
Two levels of description are approximations of reality, and they can be viewed as complementary (Prof. Frank Wilczek, the Nobel price recipient, theoretical physicist).
"Analysis is important, but it has to be reintegrated in synthesis, the context, relationships between phenomena" (Dr.Iain McGilchrist).
Knowledge is based on different data.
We have to ask ourselves which of the data are subjective, which are objective ?
And what processes in our brains govern understanding the data. Equations are made (or modified) to fit the data (to fit the limited data). They are checked against the limited data.
Measured data. What does measurement do to data?
Are they still objective?
If all we can call subjective because of the process of measurement and brain processes (for example, left hemisphere over drive and over dominance) you can call a processs of acquiring knowledge an approximation based on subjective data and limited brain processes.
Adittionally it can be tinted with ideological thinking as bias can be imbeded in cognition and it usually is.
Not only irrationality of ideology but also inevitability of defence mechanisms creating a mental illusion, a mental map of distorted reality.
Subjective data are also produced in introspection, reflection. It is called phenomenology.
They are gathered as a result of reflecting encounters with the reality, the real life not laboratory.
They go beyond the scientific method, measurements, schemas, and models that are typical to the left hemisphere take on the reality.
It has a crude, mechanistic take on it.
Adding the right hemisphere processing and balancing the perception and cognition is still limited understanding but a way more balanced.
The better aproximation of what is there, rather than confabulations and over reasoning ( over reach) of the left hemisphere.
" Confabulation is algorythmic over reasoning from the information that are limited and finite. There is an overlap between this tendency and totalitarian reductionism and over certainty. There is a hypersimplification in that".(Dr.Jordan Peterson).
Also, "totalitarian reductionism" in science.

I think that if we exclude everything beyond material from the reality, we theorise that everything emerges from material processes. We don't know if everything steams from matter. Besides, matter is a form of latent energy. We don't know what causes these processes to be so coordinated, synchronised, and elegant. In what way does the next layer emerge? Quantum physics, underneath these processes, is a realm of probability. It is mind-blowing for me. It is a mystery.
I don't think emotionally empty people. I think people who want to find spirituality and meaning in a world, in which they are faced with shallow, degrading, reductionist objects. They make themselves objects they make others objects but a deep need for spiritual is always there and propagates the quest. The hypothesis may be that these people are deeply emotional and spiritual but by regarding themselves as manipulative objects they project they own psyche, spirituality on the machines.

โ@T-Xma77 l can relate to this. Thank you for your comment. I knew someone who was constantly depressed, regardless of brilliant mind & interest in science. He was lonely. He had terrible upbringing & as a result a mental illness, he refused to treat. I think schizoaffective disorder. A bad enough ailment. He used to have massive obsession with evil, corruption of peoples'minds, including his mind, etc. trying to figure it out on his own. It causes great mental suffering to him. In the form of depression & suicidal thoughts, great anxiety. On an emotional level, he was wrecked. It was really hard for me to witness it. One day, he said he is giving everything over to God, to fix things & to deal with evil, also evil ingrained in him & other people. He stopped overly obsessing on bad stuff. He has got more strength to do good. I believe that dealing with evil is difficult & painful, burdening, and bewildering. I can also see how relying on "the greater power" can help & it is a real thing. The peace is overwhelming but also comes from loving, trusting heart & from trust in a benevolent greater power that transcends us & can fix all the mess we do.
I can not disregard witnessing miracles. Science doesn't explain it, but my experiences are real.

Thank you for your comment. It's very interesting from a biological standpoint.
I understand this "driving force towards unity" as one of the aspects of the divine/ transcendend / out-wordly / spiritual (God) who is love, beauty & life. Who sustains in life, creates. Biological processes could be one of the manifestations of this driving force. But there is something disturbingly destructive in nature (including in humans), which leads to brokenness & death. Force of evil, entropy, disfiguring beauty, creating division, selhishness, breaking perfection & beauty, destroying love in mockery, abuse & sadism. Two contrasting processes, we are subjected to as a part of nature. Recently, I think a lot about a transcendence in a broad sense, not only connecting with something beyond the reality we are living in. Also, a process of emotional growth, meaning transcending one's conditions, whatever they might be. We are destined to transcend. Life is a process leading to biological death. I think transcending from material to spiritual is necessary for escaping entropy of this world, analogically to creating beautiful forms through art, extracting beauty from nature, which is ever present in it, despite destruction & decay.
I think that the theory of evolution is not the good enough approximation of nature.
We should strive for unity because every ecosystem is an interconnected, complex symbiosis, rather than broken communities, and atomization of people. This brings many people to loneliness that is hard to bear because apart from the separation between people, we are conditioned to be separated from the divine/ God's love & order because there is supposedly no God, no higher order. This causes great emptiness and despair, separation, and alienation in man.
Thanks again for your comment! I appreciate it.

To me, it looks like overly simplistic mathematical models built on crude theories - the theory of evolution is - about highly complex systems & processes leading to absurd self- refuting findings & walking in a fog.
For example, the complexity of perception, information processing, and modelling of the reality in humans can not be described by crude models related to simple organisms.
In my view, the complexity of "a receiver & a processor of signals" from the outside world is necessary to correctly approximate the complexity of the outside world for survival & adaptation to it.
Thus, the higher complexity of a brain (mind), the better approximation of the reality we perceive & model its representations.
What we can not perceive is described by mathematical equations, which are confirmed by experiments & data that rander them valid.
& further on applicable in technological applications.
But not only. There are higher goals than merely survival of genes & adaptation.
It is evident in humans. Why do we perceive & process art? Why do we sacrifice life for non related others?
It shows to me that the evolution theory & mathematical models build on it, if applied to complex systems, lead to absurd theories like Hoffman's Methaphisical Conscious Realism Thesis & and results
Maybe these presuppositions & calculations work for simple organisms only.
It entails a great degree of reductionism.
Reductionism is over simplifying something highly complex & it is not true.
I'm a psychologist myself, with strong interests in physics.

โ@austinzizzi1142 There are changing circumstances, e.g. geopolitical, cultural, technological, psychological, within a family systems, culture, even humans' jurisdical systems, etc.
These are just variables, very important, but secondary to a person's ability to cause change in the world, based on the individual conscience.
We know about some of these variables. Some are not known to us, which proves the complexity of the world and shows us the inability to understand it.
However, what matters most is the belief in one's own agency - the rational ability to cause changes in the world. Guided through the ability to recognise the limits, which are ingrained in the world, e.g.natural, physical laws.
Our agency must be values-based.
It's not about just changing the world but about achieving good and opposing evil. This is related to self-awareness, humility, and the so-called healthy conscience.
I understand integrity in that way. Adhering to moral values.

When it comes to models of scientific cognition that will be built by humans with the help of AI or AGI, there will also be build in limit. We do not know all the variables of the model. We enter the initial assumptions into the model, we verify scientific hypotheses with tools with limited parameters, also by matter. Our senses have a limited range. Knowledge will be accumulated and analyzed within a limited set of possibilities in finiteness. Overgenralized From one system to another, given that they differ in their level of complexity and operation.
The problem is to generalize such conclusions, from finite to infinity. And it's dangerous.
Unfortunately, we are threatened by overgeneralising, which is one of the aspects of human cognition, for example, leading to severely judging of other people, within a limited knowledge about them to get oriented in a situation & to retain "psychological homeostasis" governed by "defence mechanism". It is an obvious process seen by people who work with peoples' minds.

I dont think that human consciousness is limited to brain's ability to process all sorts of information, which generates of an experience of being conscious in a human way.
Animals' brains process interception and perception, they have emotions but they do not have an awareness to be alive nor awarnes of existential condition, inescapabilitt of death etc.
Yes, we have the cortex and especially prefrontal cortex, animals do not have.
It is a place of human reasoning, planing, abstract thinking etc., which has an executive function and it is anatomically located but a question remains open of what organises, governs proceses in a brain and human body, as brain and body are highly interconnected.
What is this underlying, intricate process, this "inner movement", misterious flow, which causes such a buitiful "symphony" of reactions physical, chemical, electrical, atomic, subatomic etc. also in a brain, which in a subjective way is felt : l'm alive and concious & we call life?
It cannot be 0-1 or even quantum because there is something, which also organises quantum level from which quantum emerges?
What is the deepest underlying, organising process?
On which, the deepest level does it happen?
What is matter? Is it an information flow?
Intelligent flow?ย What is so called spiritual as opposed to so called material?
Being too reductionistic doesn't help.
It is limiting things to our current knowledge, which steams from conscious experience.

Aristotele versus Plato views in ontology, utopia of pure intellect (we can include transhumanism, scientism & mechanistic worldview in it) versus experiencing, as he calls it, "betweeness"/Gestalt, Logos versus Mythos, what can psychopathology of schizophrenia teach us, what are the consequences of poor processing of emotions ( including defence mechanisms and autism), the uncounscious, consciousness, what is truth, left versus right hemisphere functioning & response to the perceived and processed reality are, amongst other relevant topics, brilliantly described in the newest book by Dr.Iain McGilchrist " The matter with things".
I know this book is gigantic but it is worth reading & worth the time spend on it!
I think that it might be a great addition to an interesting discussion on this podcast.
It is a truly BRILLIANT, comprehensive book. I am finishing the first volume. I'd like to recommend it to everyone who is interested in a complex take on different scientific issues, also relevant to what has been said on this podcast.
" There is a clear connexion between the will to power of the left hemisphere of a brain, and a tendency to try to make reality conform to our theory; wisdom lies in conforming one's theory as far as possible to experience".
Dr. Iain McGilchrist "The matter with things".
Thank you both for interesting conversation! ๐ค
Happy Christmas!
Peace on Earth! โค

โโ@superpsychoschizo โ That's true. I had a friend who is highly narcissistic. I have known her for 4 years, being her close friend. I am very empathetic, caring, and sensitive. There were times l used to feel different and couldn't fit in. After a few years since l ended this friendship, l can see what played out. I wasn't able to see it at that time because she manipulated me into the best friendship l was in so far. I was in a new place on my own & l needed people. I have a narcissistic-father l was close to as a child. I had a need to belong. I wasn't looking after myself the way l should. I felt like a young child emotionally, although l was in my late 20ties. I was really lost & hurt. She somehow picked up on it. I treated her like a big sister l never had. Trauma played out in this relationship to an extended l am amazed now at.
It felt like having a great friend, a sister, and a mother who navigates my life, thinks for me. First time in life, such a great friendship. She was so sweet, wise, etc. I didn't pay attention at that time how cruely critical she was about certain people.l was landed the best person ever l could meet wanting to be my friend. Oftentimes, strategic, logical, cold, and adhering to her goals and plans, which were difficult, sometimes impossible to be achieved. She was mega ego maniac at times, fantasising on what she will achieve (she is very hard working, she achieved some of her goals, using other people and exploiting them, manipulating them into being servants on a" court of a quinn" )& needing her badly, controled & controlled by her. Regardless, she used people who could contribute to it like chess in a game. There were confusing moments when she raged at me for a trivial reason, moments of cruelty, rejections, cold shoulder, selfishness, extremely demanding attitude when l needed empathy or more serious situations when she picked another person as her helper, more capable than l was for given circumstances. It hurt, but l was blinded by her brilliant personality, achievements & very sad, traumatic childhood she openly told me about almost straight away after we met. She was very special.
I felt very confused in this relationship. I tried to leave it once, but circumstances were unfavourable. I was in a survival mode. I had to survive at that time.
She exploited me as much as she could. When she didn't need me, she just threw me out of her life. It came as a shock.
It is difficult to see if a person is narcisistic if you are in a relationship this person needs you.
There are hints, though.
I am grateful for my lesson, which contributed to my growth and, in a way, catapulted me to the next level & as a result, the next level of emotional maturity and so on.
I had to finish it, though.
At that time, l couldn't. I was too afraid l wouldn't be able to cope with life without this person, my dear friend l was extremely loyal to.
A year later, l decided to study psychotherapy & help people professionally. It included my own psychotherapy as a part of a training. I had a good outlet for stress and traumas.
I can help people with my own life experience & with my professional knowledge & experience.
I am glad. I think many things in life happen for a reason.
But we need to process and get free from our traumas because they DO have a profound, unconscious impact on us.
Sometimes radical, necessary changes in life help us to move forward in the right direction instead of being "in a loop" and repeat trauma. It's called the process of maturing emotionally & process of healing.

A person who murdered others was led by God to achieve this kind of understanding of love, which he put in practice.
" Be ambitious for the higher gifts. And I am going to show you a way that is better than any of them. If I have all the eloquence of men or of angels, but speak without love, I am simply a gong booming or a cymbal clashing. If I have the gift of prophecy, understanding all the mysteries there are, and knowing everything, and if I have faith in all its fullness, to move mountains, but without love, then I am nothing at all. If I give away all that I possess, piece by piece, and if I even let them take my body to burn it, but I am without love, it will do me no good whatever. Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offence and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people's sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes. Love does not come to an end. "
Saint Paul to Corinthians.

Dr. Ian McGilchrist.
Please get him !
He is brilliant!
Pre - conscious , selective perceptions and interpretations according to autobographical - narrative and according to what you pay attention to in the world ( here comes lateralisation phenomenon - what Dr.Iain McGilchrist is rightly stating, in my opinion, after 30 years of studying left and right hemispheres functions - on different ways in which left and right hemispheres see the reality according to the type of attention, which is at play).
We don't have access to unlimited data we extract from the world.
Perception is a micro-narrative.
We co-construct and co-create the reality.
There is also where comes the unconscious bias, heuristics, faulty logical thinking and preconceptions constructing illusions of the reality according to confirmation bias as well as the unconscious including "defence mechanisms", which protect us from being overwhelmed by powerful, unpleasant emotions, especially from childhood traumas and by a definition are creating a distortion of reality.
Thus, working on autobiographical narrative and "defence mechanisms" to access and process raw emotions are
an important part of psychotherapy.
Cognitive Science, psychology recapitulates theology.
I think the claim jungian psychologists make is correct.
Over 90 % of processes that govern the workings of our brains are pre-conscious or sub-conscious ( not conscious ).
What uncounscious presents to us in the dreams, symbols, implicit content, intuition, feelings, etc.might constitute an important structure of reality we comprehend with the right hemisphere.
Whereas the left hemisphere has no access to it.
The reality might be structured in a way the right brain sees and processes it.
This embaded structure emerges in symbolism, narratives, and archetypes that stand the test of time.
It doesn't mean that the incarnation of God, salvation, and ressurection didn't happen.
It is very likely that it happened because the Logos imbeded in reality became man and presented the most important story in the flesh to make our eyes open and to pay attention to what constitutes the deepest structure of reality. Namely the structure of meaning and purpose.
That's why Jacob's ladder clearly symbolises the top-down movement - God guides His creatures like a crain lifting up and transforming "the clay."

Imprisonment, treatment in prison, tortures like solitary confinement, extreme cold, low quality meals, lack of food, separation from the loved ones, false hope that he would be set free would kill anyone. Alexei Navalny was blessed with heroic virtues because he wanted to sacrifice himself for the truth. Chris-like figure. He is a saint. A real follower of Christ.
He said :" There is no death."
His moral strength is not comprehended in human terms.
Lex, we can see a different range of people in your podcast. It is good to see it. I'd like to write that your approach to conversations with people is excellent.
You explained it very well in your intro.
That's how we should talk to people if we want to get to know them, provided they will talk openly. The length of a conversation aids in achieving it as well as your inquisitive approach, empathy, deep questions, and sense of humour.
You really probe the humanness of your guests by exploring what they might even haven't explored for themselves.
So your approach to finding someone's truth is a bit like therapeutic dialogue, with all its pros and cons provided that a person does not deliberately or not deliberately lie.
We tell ourselves the lies we aren't aware of. These lies were life-saving in the past.
You don't know who you talk to in your interview because you can not diagnose them.
It takes time and clinical supervision.
Nowadays, we observe that the culture promotes more people with complex personality disorders. They, themselves, do not know what distortions, which are called defence mechanisms they have, which might be a beginning of ones demise.
Thus critical thinking is necessary as well as empathy.

โโ@Imdifferent238 We have to discover meaning of life on the philosophical level. Materialism isn't the correct philosophical statement. We only perceive the reality as material. It is not material in its essence. Thus, we can not interpret it in materialist terms. Quantum Mechanics shows us limits of our perception and understanding. Material world operates in a different way to this we learn being conditioned as children. It is a naive, superficial view- a survival mode and conditioning.
Necessity of transcending what appears to be true to the senses and rudimentary mental representations- the confines of "ego"representation.
Only when we experience something do we open ourselves to it and resonate with it. It is not only an intellectual insight. Intellect might not grasp it because we are conditioned in the reality we have to survive in. Thus, we have necessary survival mechanisms by which we are "bounded to the ground." They form representation of "ego" in our minds.Difficult experiences are very important in human life because in finiteness, we open ourselves to infinity. Finite can be experienced as unbearable. There are aspects in humans that are infinite, e.g.ability to love. We discover it.
We are also confronted with discovering Logos in nature.
We also discover Ethos- God's law in us.
We can not open up to infinite if we are not free. God frees us from the "prison of finiteness," from clinging to finiteness in various aspects. Opening us to the riches of infinity. It's as if our mind comes out of confinement, "expands." We discover our true spiritual nature and total dependence on God as transcending the finiteness of an infinite being. The unifying principle is love. In it, everything depends on each other. Without entering this level of understanding, resonating with this reality, we close ourselves in a prison of finitude, transience, cling to it as if there was nothing beyond this identity. We get stuck in suffering, survival mode, indispensable from the world of biology & psychology.

Sometimes, we have to believe in the ideal world. It is called "idealisation mechanism" and proved to be life-saving emotionally in a childhood some people had. I think it is good to be idealistic as an adult because we do not give in to cynicism and strive for an ideal - a beautiful driving force, which is spiritual and life changing - but at the same time "harsh realities of life" have to be acknowledged and integrated into the psyche. It takes a lot of pain to do it, but it is a necessary process involved in emotional maturation. At the same time to deal with evil and suffering face on, rather than not seeing it, is very difficult, but it is an important task for each one of us. It is possible to do it through facing the reality of suffering and evil, experiencing it at your core.At the same time not giving in to cynicism, egoism, or despair. Solzenycyn, Dostoyevsky, Victor Frankl, and many others great thinkers went through it. Many other people too.

In this biological, material world, we can't escape entropy. Maybe only for a glimpse of time.As if at the biological level of animate nature, the survival function of the species, i.e., the lifting of environmental burdens and the effort to adapt to the aspect of chaos in nature (decay, entropy) is of greater importance.
The effort of survival, the diversity guaranteed by sexual reproduction, performs the functions of survival and adaptation to the environment, the transfer of one's genes. As if animate nature was affected by evil, the principle of emtropy, and thus the struggle of biological beings for biological life. This is the realm of freedom. Development, intra-species adaptation, the transition of one species into another would not be possible without mutations, also in interaction with viruses that evolve rapidly.
But there is an ontological leap between humans and animals.
In a way, a sacrifice for greater than an individual good at the level of entropy and finitness.
In a way, death of "ego".

โ@sparx86 Yes, it can happen with all consequences to a scamer. It can even happen within tax system, which is legal. We have to accept the degree of financial dishonesty. We are responsible primarily for our own life, including moral responsibility, protection from evil, safety, roof over head, meaning of life, putting healthy boundaries and fulfilment as much as we can.
P.S. Lex, would you consider chatting in your podcast to a person who is seriously ill - and wants to talk about it, or a person who was widowed early and can share their story and message, a person who lost their child or a person who went through NDE and wants to talk about it, a person who worked as sex worker but now lives a decent life, a person with mental illness/ addictiobs who overcame a stigma related to it, takes medication/ undergoes treatment and lives a relative normal life, a person who overcame childchood traumas or childhood serious illness ?
I know these seem sad but many people can tell their stories of overcoming and these stories are always beautiful & people are beautiful. Some of their stories are undold but some people want to share them and make a good impact on others.Thank you for your contribution to humanity.

I think the real world is much more fascinating & interesting than virtual reality. Real people are so much more alive & interesting than their avatars. Real life is more difficult than virtual life, and real challenges happen in it, like suffering, death, and grief, no matter how much we try to escape from them.
What's wrong with real reality for some people that they readily want to inhabit virtual realities?
It puzzles me.
I don't get it.
Imitations aren't real. They are adjustable, multifunctional& exacting realisations of fantasies but who wants to have ever exciting but non real life, an illusion over real life and get addicted to it wasting a real life & not meeting of its challenges, responsibilities & difficulties, which are occasions for growth.
Real-life challenges are real & there isn't escape from reality & real feelings, no matter how perfect this thing will become in imitating real life.
I don't buy into it.
My real life is interesting and challenging enough to choose to resort to virtual escapism & fun.

Dr. Peterson is right in my view.
He refers to organised structure enlightened religion as the effect of a revelation and to the reason - cerebral cortex.
After experiencing sacred, which frees us up from our cognitive structures, we need that. Organising principle, a hierarchy, responsibility. Developed cerebral cortex - maturity, wisdom, ability to feel higher emotions (feelings), like love, hope, etc. They are a domain of the cerebral cortex.
In my opinion, psychodelics are just another form of drugs causing psychological addiction. When administered carefully under strict medical protocol, may have some benefits for mental health & those need to be carefully examined by the scientists.
They have nothing to do with operating with reason and developing spirituality.
It is another form of hedonistic indulgence and descending into the chaos of subcortical impulses governing us.
You have to have the ability to derive meaning from a mystery you have experienced, which is embedded in the reasoning, emotional maturity- the cerebral cortex.
The maturation process and development of reason a re very important. They lead to enhancement in spiritual development.
Mystical experiences are possible without substances that put a brain into overdrive and create hallucinations.
Hallucinations are typical to severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Do they cause mystical experiences?
I don't think so.

I think that it is very difficult to strive for the truth in social media settings. Each person has their version of the truth/ narrative/discourse. Each one of them strongly belives that their version of reality is the real truth, although subjective, which, in turn, generates very strong emotions used by politicians, corporations, and algorithms to sell something or manipulate to chose something. There is no one truth.
There isn't objective, cosmic order of truth.
Rational, logical argumentation doesn't apply there, partially because it is a realm of emotions and scattered subjectivity & scattered responsibility. People in strong emotions, fighting against one another, do not use logic, they might apply defence mechanisms, like devaluation to "win" argument, instead, as rightly said, to arrive at the solution to a problem or understand with empathy.
It seems to strengthen the defensive mode, which in some people is stronger than the average. Perhaps they thrive in "a climate of conflict."
The main focus is to vent emotions & eliminate what creates cognitive dissonance.
Moreover, we do not know how to argue by using logic & philosophical rational thinking anymore.
Lies can be anonymously spread, without consequences.
It creates chaos, some "forces" benefit from.
Trust in religion greatly diminished. Trust in science is diminishing & some scientists take the blame for it, too.
Nevertheless, I believe that truth will defend itself. We have to strive to find it.
" The Earth continues to be a sphere, regardless narratives that it is flat."
I think that in order to strive to find the truth, we have to develop critical thinking, honesty, integrity, and self-awareness & we need to be able to freely exchange ideas without propaganda or mob psychology.
Actually, some psychologists who know C.G.Jung's theory describe social media dynamics as similar to mob, large crowd psychology, with unconscious processes going unchecked & widely present in social media groups. Polarisation is one of the examples, similar to football fans from opposite teams fighting each other. It is a bit like tribalism, barbarism, which is described in jungian theory as "lower"/ more primitive level of so-called " collective unconscious" - shared, collective, societal mental concepts.

Here are a few reflections based on the depth psychology concepts of C.G.Jung.
When there is a very strong fear of annihilation present.
You must ensure your immortality at all costs.
Build a context to ensure it. Certain, specific conditions have to be constructed as "a scaffolding" for it.
The uncounscious terror of annihilation, without access to true light, because the order of growth and spiritual development is reversed, side down.
Instead trudging towards the beguiling, artificial light.
Transhumanism is a dangerous utopia.
The Shadow in action.
Perhaps because extensive, devastating childhood trauma preceded its development.
Until the Shadow process isn't done, everything gets projected outwards.
The brutal inner battles take place outwardly.
The Shadow is an absence of the real Light.
Access to this Light is proceeded by healthy child development when an adult reaches maturity of the reason and can be open to the Light that permeates everything.
And this child is not called a monkey, meat bag, machine, commodity.

Lex, you look like on ayahuasca on this thumbnail. On this very one shot it looks as if you have died.
It looks funny as being stoned ๐.
You will get in there in the jungle๐.
It awaits.
Sorry, the hope has died.
P.S.
In the postmodernism what was irrational has beccme the whole reality of men. There is no truth.
A truth is relativistic, limited to a tribe.
The same applies to the primitive belief systems of primitive, indigenous peoples, including shamans who intoxicated themselves with narcotic plants and built a narcotic vision of the reality. Just from a vision.
Confused drug addicts.
The counterweight to the scientism is not a primitive, nacotic vision of the world, which "sets one's mind free", but an intellectual description of the world based on reason, philosophy, revelation and Christian anthropology, characterized by the rigor of reason and Jung's depth psychology.
Jordan Peterson rightly stated that where there is no reason directed at the Spirit of Truth (God), we orient ourselves towards power or pleasure out of our basic drives - towards lower beings in the hierarchy of beings (demons) or towards luciferian intellect.
Irrationality, hedonism, greed, and becoming highly manipulative as the senses have been overstimulated the existence of Truth and the reason have been suspended.
Then the demagogues, tyrrants, narcisystic psychopaths as leaders of the countries abuse this irrational, relativistic, materialistic sphere. Alongside them, scientists in the cult of scientism and mechanistic machine thinking, who want to be the saviours of humanity.
Would they really be?
In irrational, simplicistic, highly complex reality, which is greatly simplified intellectully with many heuristics due to orientation on pleasure and shallow reasoning, being conditioned (for corporate business profits) to feel nice, rather than intellectual rigor as well as defence mechanisms due to multiplicity of traumas and thus misunderstood by people, the rulers of the world can step in and utilise these " left hemisphere" tools & irrationality of many.
Left hemisphere, which means representational, sequential in thinking, and always right.

I think it explains contemporary trends quite well. Social optimization and automation are to lead, among others dynamics, to virtual worlds because this is the nature of this system. It's not necessarily about some great, orchestrated conspiracy against humanity but about the dynamics of the capitalist system in its different stages of a development and the individual and social changes it brings.
The approach to the pandemic has brought to fruition the narcissism of the ruling elites and the corruption and profit-seeking of corporate circles.
This system simply works in such a way that it cripples humanity on individual & societal levels. It propagates itself in such ways. It is a trap we all fall into & participate in. In such a way, everyone is to blame to have fallen into such a viscious circle, wanting to have a prosperous, safer & better life.
It doesn't mean that elites should so extensively abuse the masses & damage people mentally & emotionally to keep this system going on such a large scale. Also, using & imposing ideology, not the truth. It has always happened throughout history, though. The most powerful abused the masses.
But let's not call certain, serving the system ideology the freedom & truth.

I think what can really help in war zones is to stop believing in "bulshit theories" like the theory of evolution, which is missleading & greatly damaging. Also to start treating people as people, not wild beasts / animals. Reconciliation process after addmiting savage suffering done on both sides. Fair reparations if possible. Forgiveness.
All of it requires maturity & turning back to God, moral values, addmiting ones offences & evil, showing empathy, starting from addmiting wrongdoings.
Without it is going to get worse, in aggresion cycles. The problem is when evil (suffering of innocent) accumulates it might blow out and accelerate in greater, more bloody conflict, because, unfortunately, it is a logic of evil.
Admit your evil, turn away from it & do good.
There is so great indifference in today's world, many people don't care. We were told we are just more sophisticated animals. There's no God.
Exercising it has consequences.
Reductionism & relativism are profound.
There're consequences of everything, every evil, every good, reverberating across generations & encompasing the humanity.
Largery sleep-walking at the moment.
We have to try to turn that tide.

Agreed. I also think that in some countries, like Ireland, for example, another problem crop up. It was totally unprepared, under staffed for a pandemic health care system. Modelling its incapacity for "extra beds," ventilators could lead amongst many other factors, including panic installed by the media and pseudo science, information chaos & many other factors to very aggresive, China lead, approach to the pandemic. Partly to prevent its collapse. It is so awful to think that this mismanagement has led to so many tragedies during and after the pandemic with a huge human cost.
It was greatly mismanaged and cost lives.
I think also due to common personality disorders amongst the elites. It is never easy to admit that so many mistakes have been made. Moreover these individuals aren't hold responsible for their grave mistakes & they are power drunk.
Hard to think what might happen with AI regulation and implementation. We need real science, compassion and careful consideration.

I think that forgiveness ideally should come with acknowledgement of wrongdoings and repentance, but it is not only possible. For example, due to severe personality disorder, on one part, addiction, grave moral damage, etc. The realisation might be impossible, but still forgiveness is an act of the will and a heart to not stay in a hurt and instead turn to love, without being naive, with proper boundaries in place. It is transcending evil. Sadly, a person who does evil will suffer the consequences one way or the other. Compassion is needed to stop the evil in its roots.

I witness how deeply transformative for a person is the process of healing trauma. Thank you both for this beautiful, insightful conversation.
Great documentary "The wisdom of trauma" by Gabor Mate. I watched recently & l have been very moved by it.

Regarding finding inner peace, l think what l see from my experience in therapy - my own & provided to other people - it is good to deal with emotional traumas. We never know how they can subconsciously play out in our lives & our choices causing emotional suffering. To "connect these dots" is very important, if we can. Outcome can be unexpected because we do not see our "blind spots."
Unresolved emotional issues can be a barrier to inner peace because they usually bring us to a place where we emotionally "re-live" trauma. Self-awareness is very important, including "defence mechanisms" - our not true self.
As for defence mechanisms -ways of coping with overwhelming emotion - the psychoanalytic theory says that they defend access to real emotions that had to be blocked during childhood, emotionally difficult experiences. As a result, there is a barrier to true emotional self. Instead, there is an armour from coping mechanisms, which includes harsh self-criticism as a way of defending a "parental object."
l see over and over in therspy, how real emotions are set free, and the symptoms are gone. Defence mechanisms are causing symptoms, for example, recurring depressive episodes.
I don't think accepting it would be a good idea. Having said that, therapy is sometimes a long process - 2, 3 years- tobe able to unlock and discover unconscious causes of symptoms. But it depends. It takes skills, knowledge, experience , talent ability to " feel people" from a therapist and good motivation, trust, and work on a part of a patient.
Another process alongside emotional development is spiritual development, which comes at a certain level of emotional maturity. If it's authentic, it brings enormous inner peace. It is like being in touch with something or somebody transcendend. Once we decisively open up to it. It is beautiful to see it in therapy. It can happen outside therapy, too.
In my view & experience (which is, of course, limited), inner peace comes from emotional and spiritual development. What follows is turning to a way of life, which is a way of peace, finding people, and, environment, redirecting life towards the direction of peace. Life is being alligned to peace, stability, and fulfilment.
Thank you both for wise words, advice & being vulnerable and reflective. Beautifly put words about self-development, including the one that happens in therapy.
I wish everyone deep inner peace.
Thank you SO much for valuing therapy ๐.
It is a skilled treatment. Sometimes saving lives.
Always improving quality of life and developing a person ๐.

I agree, including extremes such as body dysmorphia, body deformations, changing in whatever one wants, suicide promoting, killings, addictions, violence, self-harm, terrorism, bullying, extreme sexual deviations, pedophilia, witchcraft, occultism & stuff like that etc. I know that l mentioned extremes, but human nature can be very dark in certain circumstances.
I know it from my work. It's real life, not childlish fantasies & romanticised realities.
There are too many dangers. Safeguards? Moral responsibility?
Money & fun, learning , control, and data mining shouldn't be everything that has been taken into account in developing this shit.

I am convinced that what helps people in close relationships is not the knowledge, concepts, the theory they have about relationships, but the conversation. Something that emerges when partners with their beliefs, feelings start talking.
Then a completely new quality is created between them. A relationship discovers new areas to explore and understand.
Most people broke up because they couldn't talk to each other, couldn't help each other understand what they were thinking and feeling. When I say/express/discover something, it changes me. I am no longer the same person, and the one who hears and understands is also not the same person after meeting half-way. In a relationship, the ability to express oneself is important, but equally important is to give the opportunity to express and understand the partner. It is very difficult because we, including myself, tend to talk from our perspective and get it through to others. It is much more difficult to really understand another person's perspective. But it's great when it happens. It happens in psychotherapy, but it is one-way. But it's great to see: " Wow, l've got it right & it helps a person to move on to new insight & new feelings".
We are "wired" to cope with our feelings, process emotions and emotionally stabilise in good, close, authentic relationships.

We have to discover the meaning of life on the philosophical level. Materialism isn't the correct philosophical statement. We only perceive the reality as material. It is not material in its essence. Thus, we can not interpret it in materialist terms. Quantum Mechanics shows us limits to our perception and understanding. The material world operates in a different way to this we learn being conditioned as children. It is a naive, superficial view- a survival mode and conditioning.
Necessity of transcending what appears to be true to the senses and rudimentary mental representations - the confines of "ego"representation.
Trans-humanism is not transcendence.
It is dead end.
Finite cannot be infinite.

Sadly, l agree. Perhaps not stupid. Shallow. It's kind of ignorance in something the most profound & crucial. Thank you for your comment. I couldn't have verbalised it better.
Again, J.Peterson's & J.Lenox recent discussion on the JP podcast.
I take all he talks about critically, as regards every person l listen to, no matter how smart they are.
But honestly, his recent podcast with Dr. Lenox is brilliant.
By the way, determinism in science has been refuted. It is outdated idea. Pity it has been repeated here, uncritically.
Considering these.
One of the most important philosophical questions about the existence of the free will.
As humans, meaning creatures with limits and unsaciated, transcendend needs, we have been entrusted with a free will.
This means great freedom to decide as if we were fully aware & conscious of everything, the complete knowledge to make correct decisions, based on total truth.
Total truth is only known by God.
Such a freedom & privilege.
What a gift for us to get oriented in the reality.
Worthy of God's children.
The problem is we have & always will a limited knowledge.
We have to unite our free will with God's will through unity in Love.
Breaking off this union is very unbeneficial to us.

Well said! Only real things, real interactions, real people, and solving real problems of real people & people in need, including ourselves. Real self-growth & emotional development in real relationships. People aren't avatars, monkeys, animals or machines, computers, numbers, bags of atoms commodities, thoughtless consumers, utilised objects. Stop treating people in a reductionist way. It is insane & out of touch with the reality.
Homeless problem is spiralling out of control in SF. Who cares?
