  1. Dr. Peterson, thank you for inviting Dr.McGilchrist back. It was such a great discussion & brilliant book he wrote! I understand external processes as the effects and manifestations of internal ones. "Radical simplification" in today's culture wars using simplifying algorithms. The basis of what is right or wrong comes from ideological identifications with ideological dogmas not from moral law also encoded in the Bible and the tradition, teachings. It is rightly called algorithmic, procedural, constrained, under control, left hemispheric, collapsing the complex into crude, over simplifying and blind to what else can be true. It is not wise. Our culture permeates with left hemispheric thinking and ideas. It simlifies and trivialises practically everythig. It perpetuates the Dunning - Kruger effect. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people wrongly overestimate their knowledge or ability in a specific area. This tends to occur because a lack of self-awareness prevents them from accurately assessing their own skills. In the effects of trauma, a person disengages from reality as it is by turning to cognitive mechanisms that further distort what there is. A collection of distorted mechanisms builds distorted ideas, which form an illusion of reality - an ideology. This process happens again and again in human history. We are on the way to develop another one on a grand scale. I'd say the left hemispheric functions take part in it to curb the uncounscious the right hemisphere is more in touch with. It is a process of compressing reality into an illusion everyone should believe in for survival reasons. And act it out. To me, it seems in some part acting out traumas or brain malfunctions, where there is a lack of proper integration of its different functions on societal level. Partly due to a sudden rapture in trust and a safe relationship in trauma, one starts to believe that one can't believe his embodied experience because it is untrustworthy and dangerous. What it can cause is resorting to an illusion of the reality built by the defence mechanisms, which is internally safer and gets projected outward. World starts to operate in projection out of survival. There is a rupture in the process of integration of embodied experience and partly alienation from it. It brings alienation from reality as it is also from "the uncounscious, "the realm of God, and embodied experience and deep emotions. It is like being out of touch with processing of a process of reality, aggreviting alienation from oneself, God, others, reality as an effect. It is like being stuck in a frozen picture of reality in ever changing flow and evolving process of life. The culture that is built from the frozen frame acts as an epigenetic mechanism shaping phenotypic expressions passed on to the next generation - transmission of trauma. BRILLIANT podcast! Thank you!

  73. I understand the pain and anger of this man. I have respect for his suffering. God is love. Interpretation of love belongs to people. Misunderstanding of mercy. " When it comes to etymology, both the English word "sin" and the biblical terms - Hebrew "chatta'ah" and Greek "hamartia" - originally mean going astray or missing the goal. This allows us to see the spiritual situation of "the sinner" in the existential perspective (straying off the trail, missing the meaning of existence), and not in the legal perspective (breaking the rule) or mythological (falling into disgrace of the "higher power"). The abandonment of God's sheep (cf. Is 53:6; Lk 15:1-7), the deviation from the right path to the path to the loss of life in God's love, turning away from God (cf. Prov 14:12; Mt 7:13-14). Sin is a misfortune into which man has fallen and is stuck - but in which he remains for God a desperately sought precious person, not a hunted criminal. If sin is missing the Creator, then God's righteousness/justice (dikaiosynฤ“) is His faithfulness to unfaithful creatures. "If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, because he cannot deny himself" (2 Tim 2:13). He is not a neutral judge towards us, but a committed saviour and healer (sลtฤ“r). At the root of every separation from the Word of God- the wisdom inscribed in conscience (cf. Rom 2:15)- there is a painful distrust. We don't trust the Source of our fulfillment. This is why the only recipe for regaining integrity (returning to right decisions) is trusting faith (pistis) shown to God. To facilitate it, God reveals His character in the person of the eternal Son, wisdom incarnate, the Logos, who "has pitched his tent (eskฤ“nลsen) among us" (Jn 1:14). The decision to deviate from the proper course of life, to start to diverge from its meaning (logos), has roots in the mind being infected with the original lie. The Bible teaches about the infiltration into man of the thought that fulfillment ("being like God") can be achieved only against the Creator (cf. Gen 3:5)".

  173. "Subsystems of the Universe figuring out the information to do whatever to survive to thrive to reproduce." How could intentionality be a part of 'the blind forces'? How could telological explanation seem a part of the picture in random realm? Why did complex life, which features go beyond simple evolutionary adaptation, emerge? "Figuring it out"? Does it mean intelligence? Why does there seem to be an underlying intelligence we connect in some way by very crudely understanding some of its mechanics or more correctly put processes? To me, a very important point transpires, which is that we operate on limited data we can collect and compute while learning about the reality. As regards quantum mechanics" to fit the data " rather " to fit the limited data" or " to perceive & interpret the data" through processes of our brain we have no clue about, including lateralised information processing, which influences how we get in touch with reality. 99,95 % of brain processes run unconsciously. We don't realise how many times the physicists were wrong, including Einstein himself. How many incorrect papers did he write? Many. How humble we have to be not to become dogmatic and arrogant with our apprehension of reality. That also transpires from this conversation. Very interesting conversation. It made me think and made me more humble. Thank you! I don't agree with naturalism, though. It doesn't explain the amazing richness and complexity of reality. I don't agree with explaining human conscious and unconscious experiences in reductionist ways. A physicist neither should make hypothesis about a discipline of science, which is beyond his expertise nor generalise findings of one science to another science he has no clue about. There is a concept of complementarity when it comes to physics and psychology. Two levels of description are approximations of reality, and they can be viewed as complementary (Prof. Frank Wilczek, the Nobel price recipient, theoretical physicist). "Analysis is important, but it has to be reintegrated in synthesis, the context, relationships between phenomena" (Dr.Iain McGilchrist). Knowledge is based on different data. We have to ask ourselves which of the data are subjective, which are objective ? And what processes in our brains govern understanding the data. Equations are made (or modified) to fit the data (to fit the limited data). They are checked against the limited data. Measured data. What does measurement do to data? Are they still objective? If all we can call subjective because of the process of measurement and brain processes (for example, left hemisphere over drive and over dominance) you can call a processs of acquiring knowledge an approximation based on subjective data and limited brain processes. Adittionally it can be tinted with ideological thinking as bias can be imbeded in cognition and it usually is. Not only irrationality of ideology but also inevitability of defence mechanisms creating a mental illusion, a mental map of distorted reality. Subjective data are also produced in introspection, reflection. It is called phenomenology. They are gathered as a result of reflecting encounters with the reality, the real life not laboratory. They go beyond the scientific method, measurements, schemas, and models that are typical to the left hemisphere take on the reality. It has a crude, mechanistic take on it. Adding the right hemisphere processing and balancing the perception and cognition is still limited understanding but a way more balanced. The better aproximation of what is there, rather than confabulations and over reasoning ( over reach) of the left hemisphere. " Confabulation is algorythmic over reasoning from the information that are limited and finite. There is an overlap between this tendency and totalitarian reductionism and over certainty. There is a hypersimplification in that".(Dr.Jordan Peterson). Also, "totalitarian reductionism" in science.

  352. Thank you for your comment. It's very interesting from a biological standpoint. I understand this "driving force towards unity" as one of the aspects of the divine/ transcendend / out-wordly / spiritual (God) who is love, beauty & life. Who sustains in life, creates. Biological processes could be one of the manifestations of this driving force. But there is something disturbingly destructive in nature (including in humans), which leads to brokenness & death. Force of evil, entropy, disfiguring beauty, creating division, selhishness, breaking perfection & beauty, destroying love in mockery, abuse & sadism. Two contrasting processes, we are subjected to as a part of nature. Recently, I think a lot about a transcendence in a broad sense, not only connecting with something beyond the reality we are living in. Also, a process of emotional growth, meaning transcending one's conditions, whatever they might be. We are destined to transcend. Life is a process leading to biological death. I think transcending from material to spiritual is necessary for escaping entropy of this world, analogically to creating beautiful forms through art, extracting beauty from nature, which is ever present in it, despite destruction & decay. I think that the theory of evolution is not the good enough approximation of nature. We should strive for unity because every ecosystem is an interconnected, complex symbiosis, rather than broken communities, and atomization of people. This brings many people to loneliness that is hard to bear because apart from the separation between people, we are conditioned to be separated from the divine/ God's love & order because there is supposedly no God, no higher order. This causes great emptiness and despair, separation, and alienation in man. Thanks again for your comment! I appreciate it.

  428. To me, it looks like overly simplistic mathematical models built on crude theories - the theory of evolution is - about highly complex systems & processes leading to absurd self- refuting findings & walking in a fog. For example, the complexity of perception, information processing, and modelling of the reality in humans can not be described by crude models related to simple organisms. In my view, the complexity of "a receiver & a processor of signals" from the outside world is necessary to correctly approximate the complexity of the outside world for survival & adaptation to it. Thus, the higher complexity of a brain (mind), the better approximation of the reality we perceive & model its representations. What we can not perceive is described by mathematical equations, which are confirmed by experiments & data that rander them valid. & further on applicable in technological applications. But not only. There are higher goals than merely survival of genes & adaptation. It is evident in humans. Why do we perceive & process art? Why do we sacrifice life for non related others? It shows to me that the evolution theory & mathematical models build on it, if applied to complex systems, lead to absurd theories like Hoffman's Methaphisical Conscious Realism Thesis & and results Maybe these presuppositions & calculations work for simple organisms only. It entails a great degree of reductionism. Reductionism is over simplifying something highly complex & it is not true. I'm a psychologist myself, with strong interests in physics.

  534. โ€‹โ€‹@superpsychoschizo โ€‹ That's true. I had a friend who is highly narcissistic. I have known her for 4 years, being her close friend. I am very empathetic, caring, and sensitive. There were times l used to feel different and couldn't fit in. After a few years since l ended this friendship, l can see what played out. I wasn't able to see it at that time because she manipulated me into the best friendship l was in so far. I was in a new place on my own & l needed people. I have a narcissistic-father l was close to as a child. I had a need to belong. I wasn't looking after myself the way l should. I felt like a young child emotionally, although l was in my late 20ties. I was really lost & hurt. She somehow picked up on it. I treated her like a big sister l never had. Trauma played out in this relationship to an extended l am amazed now at. It felt like having a great friend, a sister, and a mother who navigates my life, thinks for me. First time in life, such a great friendship. She was so sweet, wise, etc. I didn't pay attention at that time how cruely critical she was about certain people.l was landed the best person ever l could meet wanting to be my friend. Oftentimes, strategic, logical, cold, and adhering to her goals and plans, which were difficult, sometimes impossible to be achieved. She was mega ego maniac at times, fantasising on what she will achieve (she is very hard working, she achieved some of her goals, using other people and exploiting them, manipulating them into being servants on a" court of a quinn" )& needing her badly, controled & controlled by her. Regardless, she used people who could contribute to it like chess in a game. There were confusing moments when she raged at me for a trivial reason, moments of cruelty, rejections, cold shoulder, selfishness, extremely demanding attitude when l needed empathy or more serious situations when she picked another person as her helper, more capable than l was for given circumstances. It hurt, but l was blinded by her brilliant personality, achievements & very sad, traumatic childhood she openly told me about almost straight away after we met. She was very special. I felt very confused in this relationship. I tried to leave it once, but circumstances were unfavourable. I was in a survival mode. I had to survive at that time. She exploited me as much as she could. When she didn't need me, she just threw me out of her life. It came as a shock. It is difficult to see if a person is narcisistic if you are in a relationship this person needs you. There are hints, though. I am grateful for my lesson, which contributed to my growth and, in a way, catapulted me to the next level & as a result, the next level of emotional maturity and so on. I had to finish it, though. At that time, l couldn't. I was too afraid l wouldn't be able to cope with life without this person, my dear friend l was extremely loyal to. A year later, l decided to study psychotherapy & help people professionally. It included my own psychotherapy as a part of a training. I had a good outlet for stress and traumas. I can help people with my own life experience & with my professional knowledge & experience. I am glad. I think many things in life happen for a reason. But we need to process and get free from our traumas because they DO have a profound, unconscious impact on us. Sometimes radical, necessary changes in life help us to move forward in the right direction instead of being "in a loop" and repeat trauma. It's called the process of maturing emotionally & process of healing.

  566. Dr. Ian McGilchrist. Please get him ! He is brilliant! Pre - conscious , selective perceptions and interpretations according to autobographical - narrative and according to what you pay attention to in the world ( here comes lateralisation phenomenon - what Dr.Iain McGilchrist is rightly stating, in my opinion, after 30 years of studying left and right hemispheres functions - on different ways in which left and right hemispheres see the reality according to the type of attention, which is at play). We don't have access to unlimited data we extract from the world. Perception is a micro-narrative. We co-construct and co-create the reality. There is also where comes the unconscious bias, heuristics, faulty logical thinking and preconceptions constructing illusions of the reality according to confirmation bias as well as the unconscious including "defence mechanisms", which protect us from being overwhelmed by powerful, unpleasant emotions, especially from childhood traumas and by a definition are creating a distortion of reality. Thus, working on autobiographical narrative and "defence mechanisms" to access and process raw emotions are an important part of psychotherapy. Cognitive Science, psychology recapitulates theology. I think the claim jungian psychologists make is correct. Over 90 % of processes that govern the workings of our brains are pre-conscious or sub-conscious ( not conscious ). What uncounscious presents to us in the dreams, symbols, implicit content, intuition, feelings, etc.might constitute an important structure of reality we comprehend with the right hemisphere. Whereas the left hemisphere has no access to it. The reality might be structured in a way the right brain sees and processes it. This embaded structure emerges in symbolism, narratives, and archetypes that stand the test of time. It doesn't mean that the incarnation of God, salvation, and ressurection didn't happen. It is very likely that it happened because the Logos imbeded in reality became man and presented the most important story in the flesh to make our eyes open and to pay attention to what constitutes the deepest structure of reality. Namely the structure of meaning and purpose. That's why Jacob's ladder clearly symbolises the top-down movement - God guides His creatures like a crain lifting up and transforming "the clay."

  573. Imprisonment, treatment in prison, tortures like solitary confinement, extreme cold, low quality meals, lack of food, separation from the loved ones, false hope that he would be set free would kill anyone. Alexei Navalny was blessed with heroic virtues because he wanted to sacrifice himself for the truth. Chris-like figure. He is a saint. A real follower of Christ. He said :" There is no death." His moral strength is not comprehended in human terms. Lex, we can see a different range of people in your podcast. It is good to see it. I'd like to write that your approach to conversations with people is excellent. You explained it very well in your intro. That's how we should talk to people if we want to get to know them, provided they will talk openly. The length of a conversation aids in achieving it as well as your inquisitive approach, empathy, deep questions, and sense of humour. You really probe the humanness of your guests by exploring what they might even haven't explored for themselves. So your approach to finding someone's truth is a bit like therapeutic dialogue, with all its pros and cons provided that a person does not deliberately or not deliberately lie. We tell ourselves the lies we aren't aware of. These lies were life-saving in the past. You don't know who you talk to in your interview because you can not diagnose them. It takes time and clinical supervision. Nowadays, we observe that the culture promotes more people with complex personality disorders. They, themselves, do not know what distortions, which are called defence mechanisms they have, which might be a beginning of ones demise. Thus critical thinking is necessary as well as empathy.

  574. โ€‹โ€‹@Imdifferent238 We have to discover meaning of life on the philosophical level. Materialism isn't the correct philosophical statement. We only perceive the reality as material. It is not material in its essence. Thus, we can not interpret it in materialist terms. Quantum Mechanics shows us limits of our perception and understanding. Material world operates in a different way to this we learn being conditioned as children. It is a naive, superficial view- a survival mode and conditioning. Necessity of transcending what appears to be true to the senses and rudimentary mental representations- the confines of "ego"representation. Only when we experience something do we open ourselves to it and resonate with it. It is not only an intellectual insight. Intellect might not grasp it because we are conditioned in the reality we have to survive in. Thus, we have necessary survival mechanisms by which we are "bounded to the ground." They form representation of "ego" in our minds.Difficult experiences are very important in human life because in finiteness, we open ourselves to infinity. Finite can be experienced as unbearable. There are aspects in humans that are infinite, e.g.ability to love. We discover it. We are also confronted with discovering Logos in nature. We also discover Ethos- God's law in us. We can not open up to infinite if we are not free. God frees us from the "prison of finiteness," from clinging to finiteness in various aspects. Opening us to the riches of infinity. It's as if our mind comes out of confinement, "expands." We discover our true spiritual nature and total dependence on God as transcending the finiteness of an infinite being. The unifying principle is love. In it, everything depends on each other. Without entering this level of understanding, resonating with this reality, we close ourselves in a prison of finitude, transience, cling to it as if there was nothing beyond this identity. We get stuck in suffering, survival mode, indispensable from the world of biology & psychology.

  677. I'm interested in science. Very good interview It is interesting to see on this podcast how minds of scientists cannot understand, without referring to God as a first principle of creation, how it would be possible this high complexity to occur as well as emergence of higher complexity escaping the entropy in a material world. Including an emergence of the consciousness. So sophisticated like in us. Such a complex of complex systems. Hierarchies of complexity which elements are ascending up from bottom to the top-the highest complexity -are common. How do they work? We don't know. From bottom to top or from top to bottom? It looks like there is a driving force of the growth to the greater complexity. Deeper physical laws we do not know of. Perhaps a spiritual force which is creative and unites in love. We don't know the workings of these systems and the ways they emerge one from another. The models are too bare. Ultimately in a material world the entropy is inescapable. What is this all for then? Maybe we can ponder on this realisation. Maybe we are so complex because we are in a core spiritual and we don't cease to exist after a death in the material world of entropy and we carry our complexity and sophistication beyond the material. At the same time the humility is present in this discussion, which l really like. Dr. Conti is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist interested in science, which l admire & aspire to be so integrated personally and caringlike he is. He presents curious humble approach to science such as physics etc. Where do we come from? What is the goal of conscious existence? Why there is something rather then nothing? Where the universal laws which govern the Universe do come from? Why did life emerge in the Universe against all the odds, which anthropic principle do clearly show to us. We cannot skip science in our attempt in understanding and approximate grasping of the reality. Same with a good philosophy (not rubish) from which psychology emerged, medicine (biology, neiroscience including psychiatry), theology and most of all profound messages of the Gospel.

  722. I think that it is very difficult to strive for the truth in social media settings. Each person has their version of the truth/ narrative/discourse. Each one of them strongly belives that their version of reality is the real truth, although subjective, which, in turn, generates very strong emotions used by politicians, corporations, and algorithms to sell something or manipulate to chose something. There is no one truth. There isn't objective, cosmic order of truth. Rational, logical argumentation doesn't apply there, partially because it is a realm of emotions and scattered subjectivity & scattered responsibility. People in strong emotions, fighting against one another, do not use logic, they might apply defence mechanisms, like devaluation to "win" argument, instead, as rightly said, to arrive at the solution to a problem or understand with empathy. It seems to strengthen the defensive mode, which in some people is stronger than the average. Perhaps they thrive in "a climate of conflict." The main focus is to vent emotions & eliminate what creates cognitive dissonance. Moreover, we do not know how to argue by using logic & philosophical rational thinking anymore. Lies can be anonymously spread, without consequences. It creates chaos, some "forces" benefit from. Trust in religion greatly diminished. Trust in science is diminishing & some scientists take the blame for it, too. Nevertheless, I believe that truth will defend itself. We have to strive to find it. " The Earth continues to be a sphere, regardless narratives that it is flat." I think that in order to strive to find the truth, we have to develop critical thinking, honesty, integrity, and self-awareness & we need to be able to freely exchange ideas without propaganda or mob psychology. Actually, some psychologists who know C.G.Jung's theory describe social media dynamics as similar to mob, large crowd psychology, with unconscious processes going unchecked & widely present in social media groups. Polarisation is one of the examples, similar to football fans from opposite teams fighting each other. It is a bit like tribalism, barbarism, which is described in jungian theory as "lower"/ more primitive level of so-called " collective unconscious" - shared, collective, societal mental concepts.

  747. Lex, you look like on ayahuasca on this thumbnail. On this very one shot it looks as if you have died. It looks funny as being stoned ๐Ÿ˜‚. You will get in there in the jungle๐Ÿ˜‚. It awaits. Sorry, the hope has died. P.S. In the postmodernism what was irrational has beccme the whole reality of men. There is no truth. A truth is relativistic, limited to a tribe. The same applies to the primitive belief systems of primitive, indigenous peoples, including shamans who intoxicated themselves with narcotic plants and built a narcotic vision of the reality. Just from a vision. Confused drug addicts. The counterweight to the scientism is not a primitive, nacotic vision of the world, which "sets one's mind free", but an intellectual description of the world based on reason, philosophy, revelation and Christian anthropology, characterized by the rigor of reason and Jung's depth psychology. Jordan Peterson rightly stated that where there is no reason directed at the Spirit of Truth (God), we orient ourselves towards power or pleasure out of our basic drives - towards lower beings in the hierarchy of beings (demons) or towards luciferian intellect. Irrationality, hedonism, greed, and becoming highly manipulative as the senses have been overstimulated the existence of Truth and the reason have been suspended. Then the demagogues, tyrrants, narcisystic psychopaths as leaders of the countries abuse this irrational, relativistic, materialistic sphere. Alongside them, scientists in the cult of scientism and mechanistic machine thinking, who want to be the saviours of humanity. Would they really be? In irrational, simplicistic, highly complex reality, which is greatly simplified intellectully with many heuristics due to orientation on pleasure and shallow reasoning, being conditioned (for corporate business profits) to feel nice, rather than intellectual rigor as well as defence mechanisms due to multiplicity of traumas and thus misunderstood by people, the rulers of the world can step in and utilise these " left hemisphere" tools & irrationality of many. Left hemisphere, which means representational, sequential in thinking, and always right.

  830. Regarding finding inner peace, l think what l see from my experience in therapy - my own & provided to other people - it is good to deal with emotional traumas. We never know how they can subconsciously play out in our lives & our choices causing emotional suffering. To "connect these dots" is very important, if we can. Outcome can be unexpected because we do not see our "blind spots." Unresolved emotional issues can be a barrier to inner peace because they usually bring us to a place where we emotionally "re-live" trauma. Self-awareness is very important, including "defence mechanisms" - our not true self. As for defence mechanisms -ways of coping with overwhelming emotion - the psychoanalytic theory says that they defend access to real emotions that had to be blocked during childhood, emotionally difficult experiences. As a result, there is a barrier to true emotional self. Instead, there is an armour from coping mechanisms, which includes harsh self-criticism as a way of defending a "parental object." l see over and over in therspy, how real emotions are set free, and the symptoms are gone. Defence mechanisms are causing symptoms, for example, recurring depressive episodes. I don't think accepting it would be a good idea. Having said that, therapy is sometimes a long process - 2, 3 years- tobe able to unlock and discover unconscious causes of symptoms. But it depends. It takes skills, knowledge, experience , talent ability to " feel people" from a therapist and good motivation, trust, and work on a part of a patient. Another process alongside emotional development is spiritual development, which comes at a certain level of emotional maturity. If it's authentic, it brings enormous inner peace. It is like being in touch with something or somebody transcendend. Once we decisively open up to it. It is beautiful to see it in therapy. It can happen outside therapy, too. In my view & experience (which is, of course, limited), inner peace comes from emotional and spiritual development. What follows is turning to a way of life, which is a way of peace, finding people, and, environment, redirecting life towards the direction of peace. Life is being alligned to peace, stability, and fulfilment. Thank you both for wise words, advice & being vulnerable and reflective. Beautifly put words about self-development, including the one that happens in therapy. I wish everyone deep inner peace. Thank you SO much for valuing therapy ๐Ÿ’™. It is a skilled treatment. Sometimes saving lives. Always improving quality of life and developing a person ๐Ÿ’™.
