That sort of thing is why I learned to wrench. It's paid off for decades. I rotate my own tires (tools and jacks are cheap compared to shop labor) of course. I have never had a dealer touch my vehicles because I buy private party then sort them out myself. It pays off very nicely and no one will care about your ride like you do.

The ANG can be a great deal. I was warned by (successful shop owner) mechanics in the 1970s not to wrench cars for a living though I'm good at it. Joining the Air Force was pure win (but sensitive people should avoid aircraft maintenance and preferably the armed forces so no one has to hear their whining!) and retirement is Very Nice. If a career doesn't have a government-guaranteed pension and benefit package no ordinary mechanic job beats it or even comes close. I've wrenched commerically for toy money at my bros shop but would never want to depend on that.

They can cry me a river. Even the ignorance of the American public and its tolerance for abuse have limits. I've never overpaid for a new vehicle because I am far too smart to buy one and paid off my home instead. Cars are disposable, houses bought to live in are for life. The vast, vast majority of new truck/SUV purchases are TOYS not necessities. Americans cannot afford these grossly overpriced unreliable toys. Good riddance. SERVE THE CUSTOMER or close.

I found a financially efficient way to save tens of thousands of dollars and pay off my homes and acreage early. It's called not buying new vehicles. Dealers are just expensive rent-seeking middlemen trying to justify their existence.

I would because I'd sell or trade it for something I've use for like a backhoe. Trucks are just money manifested in metal.

Offroad trucks are supposed to be abusable and serious off-roaders do not drive stock vehicles, they build much better customs.

@naps3386 This retired "mechanic" (avionics on Phantom and Bronco, engines later merged with crew dog on F-16s) had a great time because I enjoyed the work and found it easy, and Uncle Sugar's benefit package paid for my homes and more. If you're a pilot, who do you fly for? Entry level is famously a grind and underpaid, hence the pilot shortage.
