Optical telescopes are nice for hobbyists but hardly necessary. The world can wait to deploy (more) space telescopes above satellite levels. Starlink and successors are immensely valuable to terrestrial productivity. Enthusiasts wanting to see through atmosphere much less so. We have thousands of years to examine space and where deemed worthwhile can deploy more space telescopes. There is no place for sentiment in making these decisions. Permitting dispersed work reduces enormously polluting commuting and we are very early in that process. To move humans so they can talk to each other vs. electronic communication is absurd especially since even in the same building electronic comms dominate.

I don't believe anything based on fiction because facts are far more interesting. Fiction is for people too lazy to enjoy the enormous variety of real life.

Ancient OS (NOT on the internet OR on a LAN) are fine and machine tools etc prove it daily. I hoarded low use floppy drives from old HP servers (whose ATX cases I used long ago to build PCs) to support them and Winimaged every relevant floppy disc I could lay hands on then burned them to the root directory of CDs I still have (they're still readable due to always burning at slowest speed available, thanks CDRWIN). There is no reason to lose mad money on machine downtime to change (complexity is NOT an "upgrade") OS and hardware when stock parts are so profitable. BTW Those wanting USB floppy drive replacements should check out GoTek USB floppy emulators beloved by vintage computer users and common to CNC retrofits.
