The vast majority of Americans (even urbanites) are ignorant hicks at heart. From that majority ignorant hicks like LBJ flow. Most viewers will have no idea that Matt Ridgeway was deeply and rightly proud of keeping the US out of Nam during the Eisenhower administration, but he had senior combat leadership experience and was not some idiot civilian unable to THINK STRATEGICALLY. Viet Nam was inarguably a STRATEGIC MISTAKE borne of exceptionalist ignorance (Korea is a peninsula, Nam is not, map reading is fundamental....). There was no possible US move that China could not have countered so the North had permanent initiative. Strategy wins wars, not morality. US ability to win in ground combat was not sufficient to win the rest of the war, but idiots who think war but a technical contest will never understand that. Nothing was learnt from SEA so the US repeated its mistakes after the last Nam era leaders (Norman Schwarzkopf etc) were long gone. We will do it again in twenty or thirty years when yet another "best and brightest" batch of high IQ fools hallucinate they can win against a Maoist insurgency (Taliban fought similarly) supported by nationalists. No one who works with a foreign occupier is a real nationalist.
