  1. Russia burning through people it wants gone anyway is older than the 1917 revolution. Criminals and non-Muscovites are completely disposable and their loss has little effect on the home front. Russia has one advantage in that Russian casualties do not matter to anyone outside their families if they have any. Expending gullible rurals is a feature not a bug. Bonus for Western civilization is fewer Russians since Russia cannot reform. It cannot reform because it destroys its own intelligentsia while whoever runs the Kremlin loots the place. This has never been different. Meanwhile Russia's victims are watching and waiting. When Chechnya eventually revolts things will be quite amusing. Kadyrov won't live forever.

  2. Why would they when containing the USSR took decades? War is not Hollywood. The populace never sees the war as it isn't in Russia. Unless you are personally in the fight, there is no fight. The US population was similarly unaffected by its wars in Iraq and A-stan, and the USSR was unaffected by its war there too for the most part. It would be silly to assume differently and anyone so doing is militarily illiterate.
