  1. Why would they when containing the USSR took decades? War is not Hollywood. The populace never sees the war as it isn't in Russia. Unless you are personally in the fight, there is no fight. The US population was similarly unaffected by its wars in Iraq and A-stan, and the USSR was unaffected by its war there too for the most part. It would be silly to assume differently and anyone so doing is militarily illiterate.
