  1. A large standing modern force is required and that means PAYING a volunteer force with or without supplementary conscription. It takes years to grow an effective modern force, not a mere year or two because war changed long ago. For example it takes four to six years (approximately) to grow a truly competent aircraft technician. Many must then be retained to train others. (I use that example because I fixed fighter/attack birds for 26 years.) If you care about defending your countries, defecate the money if you must but there is no proverbial free lunch. A National Guard and Reserve system like the US uses is an effective option provided they are fully integrated with the active duty force.

  2. They wisely prefer to retain SOVEREIGNTY over their land and people. The EU is not improving as it expands elsewhere. The last fellow who wanted to unify Europe required a world war to stop. Why enable the tyranny of a collective? The further political power spreads the weaker the individual vote! EU membership gradually disenfranchises individuals by diluting the value of each vote.
