VMs are insanely handy. You can test in them instead of borking your host, you can try other OS (VMs are perfect for Linux noobs, do not dual boot off the same hard disk unless your hardware is junk or you hate yourself), you can install and configure virtual PiHoles and other appliances without buying hardware, etc. You can even boot a live Linux distro via USB then run a Windows VM off that host for two completely portable OS. You can test and compare live rescue .iso images, you can boot a Kali .iso to experiment on a Windows or whatever VM and much more. You can restore your VM to a different previous state using snapshots which beats complex setup when you break a test VM. You can clone VMs. You can boot live .isos (MS DaRT, Bob's OMB, Hirens if WinPE interests you, Linux etc if not) to learn their toolsets. You can use Disk2HVD to copy a Windows install from a hdd to a VM to migrate old OS installs with specialty programs intact while retaining the original. For example my bro had an install of Quickbooks he can never reinstall clean because it's not supported, but the virtual copy won't break (he can revert to a snapshot) and will work on any future PC he buys. (I had to rename the .VHD file extension to lower case to import it into Virtualbox but that was painless once I figured it out.) You can host your VMs on an external drive if you're low on space but that should preferably be an SSD.
