  1. If more Americans wanted to be truckers wages would be driven DOWNWARDS. Do not encourage even more drivers because it only makes life worse for everyone. (If you want a stable life with less competition, become a truck mechanic instead. )

  2. Professionals can do more with manuals. The industry relies on driver churn to depress wages so the less thought required the better. For little straight delivery trucks autos are fine across the board.
